a lot of apple bashing is, however even as techies this should **** you off, regardless of what stuff u own/like/fanboi about

conversely a lot of apple 'support' is from fan boys though (ie regurgitating marketing hype/blurbs).

It does annoy me, as it seems impossible to get a proper discussion going where an apple product is involved.

I am perfectly happy with my phone and simply stating this seems to cause a bit of a ruckus. Not sure why to be honest.

I suggest you read about the actual problem instead of skimming through the reported problems. It might give you a better understanding of the problem?

It is unclear either way at the moment but it could be affected by the mast you are connected to as well as other things, so while your phone may be ok at the moment, I'm sure you'd like that to apply everywhere you go?

Still, if that is the case at least you can return it :)

Exactly, if I am unhappy I can simply return it. Given I have used the phone for a few days covering several hundred miles of rural Scotland I would be shocked if it became in issue when it hasn't already.

Others experiences may vary but I can say I am happy with mine and don't regret buying.

Good, I hope the same holds true for me when I get one :p

like trying to discuss faith with a religious person, in the end all they say is ''its done by magic'' and ''you wouldnt understand'' :D

a lot of support for android is fan boi ish as well tho, i cant really talk tho as i have a strong bias against apple as a company. However i try to keep it out of convos...most of the time ;)

I went to my local Apple store today about this problem and they admitted that when the phone is held in that way it does lose signal. I told them all their demo ones have this problem and if they replaced my phone it would just have the same problem so in the end they give me a free bumper, they didn't take down any of my details which was good ;)

I'm going to try this :D

Has anyone else managed to get a freebie?

If it worried me I would simply return the phone and I have no desire to do so because as I say its not an issue for me.

Reason I ask is because as far as I can tell those making the most noise are people who do not own an Iphone. Which to me seems to be more about looking for a fault than practical experience of using the handset. Others may be unhappy but I am not, why get upset about something which does not affect me? Thats like getting upset because somewhere they sell Mars Bars for ten pence cheaper than I can buy them, completely irrelevant to myself.

I have a 3G and I can hold it any which way I like and have no issue - even in weak signal areas [the Peak District or Snowdonia for example]. I want to upgrade to the iPhone 4, but I want to know this issue is being looked at and being sorted out.

As has been said what does it matter if someone owns the device yet or not? £500+ is a lot of money. You wouln't buy an expensive telly if it had known picture issues, you wouldn't buy a car with known engine problems, you wouldn't buy anything expensive if you know it has an issue.

Why are the "oh it's not a problem" people completely blind when it comes to the iPhone 4?

The news of an OS4 update which could fix the issue is very welcoming. I look forward to see if it works. :)

As I stated (more than once) I have had no issues with my handset. No problems, and I am very happy with my device. However....other people may not be having the same experience as me.

Which part of that statement makes me blind?

I don't think people really have an issue with the bars going down, it's more the fact they go all the way down to 'no service'. For example, last night I was using the phone to browse the web and noticed I had no reception due to holding it, if someone wanted to call me in the hour or two I was browsing they wouldn't be able to contact me. For a device which the primary function is a phone, this is unacceptable.

If the bars dropped like the ones in your video I wouldn't care at all and neither would most other people, it's the fact it goes all the way down to 'no service' and stays there until you release your grip or hold in an unnatural way.

As he says i am another user that got no prob at all I can't faut my iPhone 4 and not had one signal drop call or anything...

I'm surprised this made it through testing and I'm hopeful a software update will fix it. I had a chance to get one on Thursday but I'm glad I didn't now, although the sooner it is resolved the better because I do want one.

I also think Jobs really dropped the ball with his "don't hold it that way" comment as well. For a company that tries to hide the nuances and complexities of hardware from their customers and make products that "just work", telling people to hold the phone differently from what they obviously feel natural is just a cop out. It's not a solution, it's a crude mitigation at best.

It's like buying a new car that pulls to the left slightly, and the manufacturer telling me to turn the steering while slightly to the right to keep it in a straight line. I don't think so.

What puzzle me is why some having this prob and some isn't? I have tried everywhere i been to try And get this no services to appear with no luck at all. Must be lucky?

I can't get it to drop to no service either. I can get it down to 2 bars of 3G.

I'm guessing I'm not far enough from the nearest mast to attenuate the signal enough for it to drop.

If it's an issue in the baseband code, not correctly handling an attenuated signal. All the better, as that's an easy fix.

I've just visited the apple store in leicester. There was a guy next to me asking a member of staff about this issue. The staff guy said that they hadn't experienced it on any of their demo units etc. Odd really because the unit I had in my hand at the very moment was showing the exact same symptoms. Started out with 5 bars and had dropped to 1 within a minute.

I'll probably still get one and a case of some sort though. My iphone 3g has lived in a case since the day I got it back in 2008

I do live out in the sticks and reception here has always been patchy at best. The iPhone 4 is the first iPhone that manages to hold any reception (three bars) here. This would be fantastic apart from the whole bit about the signal dropping to nothing when I hold it.

If they manage to get a Firmware fix for stopping the reception from dropping then I don't care how many bars I get as long as it holds a call and can receive mms/text messages etc.
