Not sure if this has already been mentioned in this thread but is anybody suffering with the proximity sensor issues? At first I thought it was user error until it started to manifest itself more frequently. A quick visit to a few of the sites who regularly update news on the iPhone seemed to have confirmed this as yet another issue with the phone.

Personally, I've accidentally put a few people on mute or on speakerphone and have accidently hung up too. The screen can sporadically activate when the phone is next to your cheek, upon which contacts the screen and activates the call option buttons. It seems a random problem, sometimes it does it, other times it doesn't, there doesn't seem to be any specific condition in which it happens.

This along with the signal 'issues' have really begun to cheese me off with this phone now. I tolerated the signal issues but this has added insult to the injury. It has spoilt what I initially considered a highly anticipated release and for me has nullified any enjoyment of its new features.

For some reason I don't see a software fix coming soon for any of the aformentioned problems either. :(
Yeah I think this is happening to me. I have hung up and even called my mum whilst on the phone to a friend!!

So... what is the general consensus that the end result will be here? I really wanted to get an iPhone 4 but I won't until this is fixed... do you think this means waiting for an iPhone 4s or whatever or do you think there will be a software fix/recall?

has anyone noticed the sensor is on the other side of the phone this time?

This could be why people have problems. I know I have more problems if I hold it to my left ear (sensor at the front)

.... you're not holding it right!!!

I'd hold off buying one tbh. I am still puzzled why people are out there buying them with such an issue.

As I've said, I've yet to have any dropped calls whilst holding the thing as I did my 3G - deep in my palm. However if I was to do the same thing whilst browsing the web, data bandwidth would drop massively.

Apple are too high and mightly to do a recall, so I'd just wait until something is done. I'm heading to the Apple Store in Brent this weekend to talk to someone as I've got till the 7th July to return my unit.

Difficult to tell at this stage whether a software fix will be possible for either of these problems.

You'd of thought the proximity sensor issue was fixable by software but I'm beginning to have doubts. Apple hasn’t been forthcoming about this issue, which is rather worrying. If it could be fixed you'd expect a rapid firmware update to avoid any further embarrassment, especially with the controversy that was generated by the antenna issues.

I am very close to returning this phone for a refund. It's 50/50 for me at the moment; I'm hoping there will be a 4.0.1 update soon that resolves the worst issues but the 14 day window in which I can return the phone is creeping ever closer. I can tolerate one problem but certainly not another one which I consider worse!

My advice: Wait a while and see if they resolve the issues within the next month, otherwise don't bother. I've learnt my lesson here and will err on the side of caution upon the next release, I'm not going to be Apple's guinea pig and I certainly don't see why anyone else should be either!

I believe the sensor has been moved above the earpiece to accommodate the front facing camera and the shape of this sensor has changed from circular to an elongated shape, correct me if I'm wrong on that though!

Could be bad positioning of the sensor that’s causing the issues, really hope that isn't the case though. Difficult to determine the problem until Apple acknowledge there's an issue and look into it.

Gibber

I agree with you 100%. I cant see how they can fix it with a software update though?

seem's like bad placement to me! i'm getting closer to sendig it back...!

apart from the fact it does't work as a phone its wicked...!

Yea thanks, I'm worried about my use of the English language on an internet forum.

Wonder if its the 200mb Video I tried out, tho its only a few minutes long, its doesn't seem to want to import.

Good ole reset everything and its started working again, think it might have been a problem hooking my iPad in at the same time.

Has anyone returned their phone? If so, did the problems go?

I'm looking to exchange mine asap as the phone crashes everyday. After a reset its fine but it's just annoying!

If that is true, then lol.

Indeed, Jobs has all the "people skills" of a knuckle dragging club wielding neanderthal in full on "ugg ugg" mode.

Ultimately, the most worrying aspect about his emails and Apple's official statements is that they seem to fail to truly acknowledge the reality shown by experts and many iPhone 4 users such as this one

Reality distortion field in full effect it seems. :o
