Thats what the notification bar is for... for things called notifications.

You could as easily say "that's what the blinking led on 10 years old nokia is for". The notification bar ship in android has sailed the moment phones started posting 20 system notifications a day to it by default, "enable location services", every program auto updated, etc. It became system log console, not notifications. I know you can disable those per app, but let's face it, it's tedious to do it after each new app installation and most people who just buy a phone to use it, not to tweak and root it, will never venture that deep into settings menu.

Why wouldn't you want to have an option of showing unread counts straight in the dock like IOS does? Why would dev team behind the OS not provide code to make such option possible? Why does it have to be dirty hack with root and custom launcher?

Going for the iPhone 6 64gb. A little annoyed they have gimped the iPhone 6 to make the plus more desirable (would love IS for videos) but after owning the Note 2 for 20 months I've had enough of phablets.

I originally moved from iPhone 4 to the Note 2 as I didn't want to carry an iPad and a phone for my commute. Thought a 5.5" phone will do as an all-in-one solution; whilst the screen size is great for games and videos it wasn't big enough to read pdfs or ebooks comfortably, nor was it that beneficial for web browsing. You do get use to the size but you remember how annoying it is when you're standing on the tube during rush hour, typing is near impossible one handed. :p Also the size is definitely noticeable in trousers, my Note 2 just about fits into my jeans, at times I have to take the phone out whilst sitting as it's quite uncomfortable.

Which is arguably worth every penny given the customer service attached.

I've had to help someone deal with Samsung over a new(ish) laptop return fault and to say their customer service was an absolute nightmare is a massive understatement. I've no problem with Samsung in general but this made me think twice, it's not an isolated thing either.

Agreed which is why i was expecting to pay over £700 for a large screen new iphone and they've come in about £100 less than i anticipated but with much less phone so I'm not with apple for yet another year.

Android shows new items/unread (sms/email/facebook/etc) on the icon? (and on the folder if necessary)

Apple are typically great with this, and I think everyone is catching on. I recently had a fault with the micro usb on my Nexus 5 and I fully expect I would need ot send it back and wait for it to be repaired and so on. Called Google and they sent me out a new one the same day free of charge, this wans;t a refurbished unit but an actual brand new phone, and I sent them my old one back in a prepaid package.

I would still say Apples is faster as there is no delay typically since you can go in store but I was really blown away. I have only ever had another broken product which was my Dell XPS and it being XPS meant I had an engineer over my house the very next morning and everything was repaired.

I have however seen Friends with HTC devices on Facebook have to wait weeks to get things fixed and as a whole it seemed like a huge cluster.

It doesn't. Not in stock android. I bought Motorola with kitkat for my other half literally few days ago and was surprised dock icon unread counts (global badges is it?) are still only available as a dirty hacks through custom launchers with extra plugins (and even they don't work with some manufacturer customised mail apps). Even if you wanted unread counts as persistent notifications in status bar you would need to buy extra apps like MissedIt.

Oops sorry, its Touchwiz on the S5 that is doing it on mine then. :p

Nice u-turn, it's nice that Apple can admit they were completely wrong about phone sizes all this time and admit Android are doing this right.

Samsung have done it better with the Note 4 though, shorter, better display and better battery life, oh it comes with the the S-Pen.

As for the 4.7"and similar there are already loads of Android phones on the market with 1080p displays.

I printed out the templates. Need some card to get them to the appropriate thickness though. But... yeah, I don't think the 6 Plus is going to work with my midget hands.

Depending on the price difference between the two phones I'm either going to pick up a 5S on contract or a 6. Not really bothered about storage capacity personally 16GB will do me as all of my music and video is streamed nowadays. Photos don't really take that much space up and can be synced or stored in the cloud, not really sure how people are managing to fill up 64GB worth of stuff on their phones. :p

Has anyone bought the apple silicone or leather cases for the 5S? I'm considering the leather one for the 6, but having never seen one before I'm not sure how good they are. I'm pretty fussy when it comes to cases.
