Got a standard 6 yesterday. Been tinkering with it since. I have not used an iPhone since I had a 3G back in 2009. So it has taken a little time to get back into an iOS based system.
So far I am really pleased. The phone is just the right size and feels nice in the hand. The screen is a little "squished" with regards to aspect ratio but after you have been using it for a few hours you don't really notice it. Can't say I am having any screen issues either. iOS8 feels intuitive, and so far my user experience has been great. It just seems to work and after playing about with the phone yesterday evening it feels like I have never been away.
But one of the things that has impressed me the most is the link between my PC and phone with iCloud. I just put my itunes details into my phone and it had all of my purchased music ready to stream from the cloud without having to connect to iTunes on my PC. I had some issues getting my Google Gmail contacts from the phone onto iCloud though and that took me an hour or so to fix, but in the end it was really simple. I just opened Gmail on my computer, selected to export the contacts list as a file, and then imported the file into iCloud and voila! Syncing fine now, and it has also populated my address book in outlook too.
One thing which I wondered about as using the phone was my iPhone 3G, and the apps I paid for and downloaded to it back in 2009-2010. got the Appstore up and went to updates. Then selected purchased, and bosh - all my old apps from the 3G were available to download from the cloud!
But I admit I may be over impressed by the sharing, iDrive and iCloud etc because I never used the equivalent on my Android devices. It just works, though, and I am really really pleased. Touch ID makes buying apps and music a real breeze now as well. Its a simple system, but it works well. But again, it may well be that other devices have the equivalent.
The one downside I feel is the lack of real customisation for the desktop out of the box. I'm sure there will be an app for that, but it does feel like the desktop experience has not moved forwards much at all since 2009. That said, at least now there is a notification area, and a quick access bar.
I have also been unable to locate any NFC settings at all, or any kind of app that comes pre-installed to use it. I have read Apple Pay does not go live until October, but I would have thought the basic settings would have been in the system already. I have also read NFC will be locked to Apple Pay outlets only, which is a bit of a let down if it is true.
I also feel one thing is a certainty. Many people will be dropping this phone. The rounded edges make it feel comfortable enough when you do have a hold on it, but they become like trying to grab a wet bar of soap covered in butter with axle grease on your hands when changing your grip! I have almost dropped mine twice now because of that!
I have turned off a lot of the location tracking too to try and aid battery life, as well as that image blur thing it does for screen movement.
We will see how it goes from here, but my first impressions are good. I have waited for so long for an iPhone with a bit of a bigger screen, and a more stylish design. I am really happy with mine, and I am glad I didn't go for a 6+. It would have been far too big for my tastes. The 6 feels just about right, and gives a good balance between screen size and practical usability.
Not that it really matters, but my previous phone was a Nexus 4.
