I personally like having 2 different OSs, let me keep upto date with all there changes, advantages/disadvantages and what not. It does get annoying with Apple purchases thou since I tend to spend a lot of money on Apps so I have a decent amount invested in both camps, for a lot of similar apps.

Looks like the announcement (and possibly launch too) is all going to take place while I'm on holiday in Spain. Probay going to be a long wait when I get back

Yeah my S3 has shown signs of ageing proper bad over the last few months. Ready to get back on the Apple wagon (cart) lawl.

The UK is essentially just a replacement market for Apple smartphones, with few if any new buyers. The real growth possibilities for Apple is in emerging markets but their products are way to expensive for the average punter there. Android market share worldwide now 85% and Apple at 11%. A new larger screen, expensive iphone is not going to solve this problem for Apple. And yesterday we learn that China Mobile, Apple's largest carrier in China is cutting $ 2 billion from subsidies on smartphones that will positively boost local Android based manufacturers who sell SIM free. Apple's SIM free high price will be seen in all its glory there.

Conclusion: iphones are a niche business, yet highly profitable because of marketing glitz by Apple.

Normally I would agree but I beg to differ this time, I for one am considering the jump from android to apple and I don't appear to be the only one thinking along these lines.

We've known that for a long time, it's how they operate. Aside from the financial gain, selling a very limited number of well polished products is not a bad idea, so long as you keep up with market demand or have some pretty cool new technology you can push out.

Shock as product costing £50-500 has greater market share than product costing £500-700. :p

Android also has more market share in the highend, this is using americans numbers so its might not be true everywhere but I was pretty shocked to find out about this based on the latest reports. Also put a huge nail into the whole people only buy android cause its cheap argument.

Now if you do the maths it works out.

High end Phones
Android 0.2 * 255 = 51 million
iOS 0.85 * 35 = 29.75 million

So there are twice as many high end Android phones being sold, so not only does Android dominate the market share at large, it also more then twice the amount of high end phones.

I would agree, Apple makes a huge amount of money today, but the future is in the next 6billion users, none of which are interested in paying £500+ for a smartphone, and as such the iPhone won't grow as much. The rest of Apples business is not too great, mac sales are going along fine, iPad has been a bit shakey and as a whole no one is exactly sure where it fits in yet, the iPhone accounts for a huge amount of Apples sales and I really feel they need something in the mid rage (not a iPhone 5c with 8gb that still costs £429 like wtf).

Will see off course, but I personally feel they need to be a bit more competitive or they might start becoming irrelevant. I mean they lost a lot of users to big screen Android device, no matter how good the iPhone is they will never get them all back. You can see the current growth rates and there not keep up at all, and everyone else is just dyeing off. It could be that just Apple fans are left with iPhones and everyone else goes android at some point.

What are Samsung going to do if Apple actually do release a larger phone AND a phablet this year?

I think its going to seriously hurt them, almost all the people I know with Notes came from iPhones and lovely a screen that offered maybe twice the surface area at the time. I could see a lot of them switching back, again some might be like oh its the same now and not care too much.

Either way its going to be the first serious competition to the Note, given nothing else expect Galaxy/iPhone sells in any meaningful way.

Excellent analysis. Gartner numbers you show are well-researched and generally accepted. The biggest growth market today is actually India, where the average daily wage is a few dollars. Apple approaches this dilemma by heavily discounting previous iphones, despite being a number of years old. Apple appears to believe that it can prosper in a huge growth market like India with glitz, marketing and years old iphones vs the domestic (Indian) onslaught by Android OEMs that will prosper with the new reference design for Android L (and produce sub $ 100 high quality smartphones) and other newer, lower priced but high quality Android smartphones. It will be an interesting battle between Android and iOS played out in India and many other emerging markets such as Brazil, Indonesia, etc.

It will be very interesting indeed, the iPhone 4 isn't a great experience anymore and it still costs a lot compared to the Android devices in these markets. I think Apple needs a serious devices for these markets at some point since there they are literally running out of growth in the highend.

I personally feel they need to have something like the 5c but targeted at the lower end and only sold in markets like china/india so they can be seriously competitive.

1810mAh should be fine for a full days use but it's a bit on the low side.

2915mAh could be a good 2-3 days though if the screen isn't too much of a power draw.

5-6hrs screen on time is about the norm for the flagships these days. If this doesn't achieve the same then it'll be disappointing.

Well I get around 5 hours screen time per 24 hours on my 5S (approx). So a 20% larger battery (roughly), combined with the larger but newer LCD screen and new SoC could keep that the same.

I'll probably go for the iPhone Air (or whatever the larger one is called) though, it's a bit big but **** it. :D

They are touting a feature of the 6 is the 'unscratchable' sapphire screen. Is this really something on people's requirements fo the 6?
