What's the best strategy for making sure you get one of the first batch?

No real guarantee, just make sure you are there when pre-ordering goes live. Not sure if it's been luck, but I got day 1 phones direct from Apple on both my iPhone 4 and 5, but I ordered literally as soon as it was possible on the site.

the ipad air is using 2046 x 1500(ish) screen buffer tho

Well I would expect the new iPhone to be near that anyway, over 1080p at least?

Is it even unified RAM? The PowerVR doesn't have it's own memory? (I don't know). Anyway frame buffer is not a huge problem, even at the iPad Air res @ 32bpp (no idea, could be less) you're only looking at 12MB.

What's the best strategy for making sure you get one of the first batch? I was badgering the O2 customer service on chat last night because my contract has ended. They didn't know anything really, managed to get my current contract reduced to £15 (down from £38) a month for the interim though.

I've only ever ordered from Apple, I got the 4s; 5, 5s all in the first batch. The only thing I did was made sure I pre ordered as soon as it was possible :).

In fact, I tell a lie, one of my pre orders was delayed, despite having ordered straight away, Apple changed my delivery date, contacted them to enquire why and was sent a £50 iTunes voucher as way of an apology too.

Do you have to order direct from Apple's own website on day 1? Does the phone become available at other retailers on the same day? I've never got an iphone on the day of release but I hate my android device and want to switch back the Apple.

I've always ordered from Apple on the day of release, usually within the first couple of hours.

I would not have a clue about when the iPhones become available elsewhere, I think that mobile companies tend to wait a while, however I'm not sure.

The last couple of times I've found that using the App on my current iPhone is the best (easiest) way to order, but the website is usually good too, if you're on quickly you can be done in 2 minutes before the big traffic hits the site.

Okay, thanks for the info mate. I'll just order from Apple's website. :)

I think with my 5s order I set an alarm for about 5-10 minutes before the site was due to go 'live', then make a cup of coffee and just sit and wait for it to come online.

Took a couple of minutes. Easy. Crawled back to bed afterwards.

Sound, I've always got my phones through a merchant like Carphone Warehouse, just when I've been due for an upgrade. Probably pop down at the weekend and talk to someone in-store.

Correct me if i'm wrong but there is very little chance that preordering will go live straight after the event right? probably a day or two wait?

As far as I can remember they were available in the mac store online right after the event for the release of the 4.

I seem to recall that after the 5S the pre orders started the next day and crashed the apple store website.

How long do they normally last for, won't be in until 7pm at least :(

will be over by then.

You're best off just downloading the video they put up afterwards. Podcast version usually follows soon after.
