iphone down to £169

My iPhone is on the standard 02 £35 tariff, what am I going to gain be jailbreaking the phone?

It's been answered before but you gain the ability to install a large amount of 3rd party apps from things to plug the functionality gaps (MMS for instance) to games to silly stuff like the shaver :)

Other than the Installer apps? The ability to have any SIM?

If you already have a legit contract then it's not worth the hassle IMO.

I'd say it's worth the 'hassle' of jailbreaking regardless.. the 3rd party apps make it worth having imo.

Some of the apps are great, but until the SDK is released then I can't see anything that's blown me away.

By hassle I meant the original jailbreak methods, none of this GUI-app-n00bness ;)

I can't see there being anything better when the SDK is released as it's more restrictive than the current method; the only advantage is the limited interface builder.

The MMS app, instant messaging, IRC client, ability to copy files directly to/from the phone, sketches, games and the ability to make your phone sound like a shaver are well worth having in my book (except maybe the last one :)) And Jailbreaking is so easy even a drunken monkey or woman could do it (except maybe the last one again ;))

I've asked the admins if these forums can be renamed to Apple Hardware and Apple software so iPod, Mac, iPhone threads can all be in one place.

Will see what happens.

Just to add something else to the debate.. is there any need to a hardware and a software forum? There's not that much traffic in either, and this thread for instance is more about software than it is hardware :)

Just a thought.

Then you're going back to the Linux, OS X and Open Source days...

Although, when a new toy is released each subforum explodes so it's swings and roundabouts.

Not at all.. I don't think they should be shoved in with those unwashed Linux people (;)), but just into one Apple Hardware / Software forum.

Aye, but I still think that the forum would be too active around product launches which would make moderating them nigh-on impossible.

I'm in favour, but I can't imagine the number of repeated threads because someone's thread "iPhone help" is lost in 2 minutes when a new iPod is released.

I disagree, when something new is released there are repeated threads in both mac forums, covering the same topics, and if it's something new to do with the phone they go in both mac forums and the phone forum.. makes for a lot of forums to check :)

i believe it belongs in phones because it is a phone. i dont use a mac, i dont use any mac software so to me it macs no sense being in the mac forum. a separate subforum in phones would make more sense to me:)

If the forum is named "Apple Hardware" and "Apple Software" with a description along the lines of "All hardware and software releases associated with Apple to be discussed in here. This includes, iPhones, iPods, Macs and accessories" wouldn't that be better.

The phone subsection smells.
