iphone not on O2, whats the benifits?

So whats the cheapest way to get an iphone without a contract?

£270 from o2/Apple/CPW and the like, then unlock it and chuck a SIM in.

The o2 Simplicity SIMs come highly recommended as you can bolt-on unlimited data.

So I've got a t-mobile sim atm so I can just go buy one and put my sim into it and it will work?

So why would anyone ever buy one with that stupid O2 contract?

Also can you get student discount on it?

Oh, and why do they sell for more than retail on ebay?

I believe so, although i'm not an owner myself. But there's a thread in the Mac Hardware forum about unlocking the iPhone, and recently it's been made possible to unlock it to any network, not just O2 and Tesco.

Unlocking is a bit more hassle, it voids your warranty and you need to wait for firmware updates to get "fixed".

Not sure, you will need to check the Apple website and/or give them a call and ask.

Oh come on! :p It's Ebay! :D

Just been thinking, if Orange don't do the N95 (8gb) then the likelihood of my being able to get a handset to fund my iphone purchase is slim :(

Looking on the Orange website their upgrade choices look poor? Is there better handsets to be had if I go instore do we think?

A few reasons really. It's not badly priced, it has unlimited data, it has visual voicemail and you can receive MMS messages (albeit via a web link) rather than never knowing they arrived. Also you don't have to bother with unlocking a phone or worrying about firmware or itunes updates. For the normal person on the street there is nothing wrong with the iPhone contract at all, especially now the minutes and texts have been greatly increased.

I have an unlocked iPhone, but there is no way I'd recommend it to people who can't be bothered with the hassle or are not tech savvy enough to know not to update the firmware or itunes when it asks. It already happened to a couple of people I know when 1.1.3 came out who ended up not being able to use their iPhone for a few weeks until the 1.1.3 hack came out.

I take that as a no then? :)

Just curious guy's, after reading through the whole thread and people discussing unlocking the Iphone. wouldnt it just be easier to go onto th o2 network as it would end up a lot cheaper anyway.

o2 contract £35 + original network cost that you'd be sticking on.
so effectivly paying £35 more a month just to have the iphone on a different network.

No.

If you unlock the iPhone, you don't need to take out the O2 contract.

You're probably a little confused by the purchasing process for the iPhone. You buy the physical handset from O2/CPW/Apple for £269/£329. Then you go home, plug it into your computer and activate it with iTunes, at the same time signing up for the O2 contract at £35/45/75 a month.

However, you can also buy the handset, unlock it and then put in whatever sim you want, and avoid signing up to the O2 contract

Personally I'm on T-Mobile with Flext 20 Web'n'Walk, allowing unlimited data. It's costing me a total of £12.50 a month, as I have T-Mob loyaltly discounts.

OK cool, that makes things a lot clearer. might be tempted now.

what happens if you dont activate it? does it just stay effectly an Itouch?

Will the plot thickens!!

Orange retail shops don't stock the N95 (8gb) BUT the guy I just spoke on the phone with (from my local store) said I could go to CPW and get the N95 (8gb) on and Orange contract as an upgrade... wtf?

Strange but if that's the case then I'm happy, but until I get there and hear it for myself I'm loathed to believe it :)
