ipod classic just arrived

I use Beyerdynamic DT931s. Even with them, iPods sound crap.

Is that with or without an Amp? It takes quite abit to drive them with a portable player like an iPod.

Anyway, matt, update your iPod Classic, it's an option when you plug in your iPod - should ahve an update button somewhere. It helps with the Coverflow, makes it faster/smoother.

Edit: I like FLAC but it's a BIG, so unless I get say an iPod Classic 160GB, it'll not be able to hold a lot of music on the go. A portable player like an iPod is more than adequate when encoded LAME MP3 at 192kbps VBR or higher when I use a Mylar Crossroads XB (still waiting for a Goldring G200 to play "spot the difference").

If you want Aural pleasures - a home Amp HiFi kit is the way.

With 'normal' earphones, my iRiver can play for close to 30 hours....With my Beyers, it drops to around 18 hours. Full volume on the player is just loud enough to be able to hear it when they're slung 'round my neck.

I keep meaning to get a portable amp....Any recommendations? Preferably one with a rechargeable battery pack or one that will take some nice rechargeable AAs...

oooh, going to have to google that now. High compression is about 500 - 700 mb per album killing my disc space if i could get it down to 300 - 400 that would be handy.

You'll need a player that can decode Ogg Vorbis. It's a very power-intensive codec.

If my h140 died I would have no idea what to replace it with :(

This has been raved about on Hifi and headphone forums whilst I was looking for a IEM upgrade from the Mylar.

Ooooh.

Pricey though. And I'd need a new battery every week...Are rechargeable 9v batteries any good these days?

I had thoughts of building a CMOY a few years back but never got around to it...Perhaps I should give one a go sometime :/

Yes it's pricey but isn't aural pleasures supposedly an expensive hobby?
I've not got one so I can't really comment on it - I don't need one yet, my ears are still happy with IEMs... for now.

You might want to pop to headfi.org for more stuff on portable amps, maybe something more price friendly can be found there...

Not for me. I buy older kit wisely.

iRiver h140 - around £180 (when it was new...Special offer, yo ;))
Beyerdynamic DT931s - £80 (half price because I set up the store owner's website)

So as it stands, I have a kickass portable setup for less than £300 which would be very hard to beat.

I need to refurb my Beyers though. The pads are a bit on the filthy side...Perhaps replace the cable too (Fancy getting rid of the mega-long coiled one for a 150cm straight one....).

Will need to read up on both.

I have it connected now. It says Connected and under that 'eject before disconnecting' There is an icon in the upper right that is a clear white battery logo with a little black connection picture in the middle.

Does this mean it is properly charging? (or just connected)

My nano used to have a flashing logo for charging

OR go to Tesco / Sainsburys and get a mains charger for about £6 , thats what ive done :P
