Anyone play this?

Decided to try it out yesterday, $5 not bad for first month. I'm no good at it, need to start learning setups and things, but the atmosphere is amazing. I've never been in a crash in a racing game and cared enough to apologise and receive a "Nope, my fault" back.

If anyone here plays it and wants to show me the ropes I'll give you a big hug ;)

How strange, I signed up for a month last night. Im an avid fan of Live for Speed but just wanted to give something else a go.

I am quite impressed with it so far. Although slightly annoyed at the amount of downloading you need to do. I would have much prefered the whole download being 1Gb or so rather than 200Mb and then the need to download loads of other stuff.

I did my first race last night which was the Solstice Challange at Leguna Seca (11PM), i came 6th out of 12. I was pleased as i only did 3 laps practice before the race.

It does seem like a good game, i enjoyed the racing and the Etiquette last night. The only thing that maybe did bother me was the fact that this race only had 12 people and it was 11 laps with a really slow car, although im only moaning as im used to quick 5 lappers in lfs.

Good game though, not sure if its worth a monthly subscription.....

The hardest thing to deal with in iRacing (apart from the ongoing cost) is the racing culture. After 18 months I'm still not assimilated by the iRacing Borg, but I did slowly learn to tolerate the limitations. Just.

Personally I would love some regular sprint races as part of the schedule. But the hardcore sim "elite" around whom the service was built say that's what other sims are for (and iRacing are afraid to do something like that because... well, it'd be too popular I suspect and mess up the main race system). But other sims can't match the amazing sense of being in control of a real vehicle which iRacing gives me.

So... so you learn to bend to the limitations. You get used to waiting ages for races which you might get punted out of very quickly. You get used to being tempted to sign up for just one more season and one more track and car. And you get used to being poorer.

Of course if you really want short races you can host one for $3. But $3 for five laps might be a tiny bit of a waste of cash. :-)

Anyway, the best advice I can give anyone is to be patient... both in races, and in expecting too much too soon from iRacing. It really does take time to settle in. I left three times before eventually signing up for a full year when there was a $75 deal, and I still have good days when I think it's been worth every penny, and bad days when I think I must be totally insane.

The bottom line for me though, as I said above, is that since I joined iRacing I haven't been able to feel comfortable in any other sim... though I do still enjoy thrashing around The Ring in my Subaru in Shift. :-)

PS Don't take the main forums too seriously. They can be a strange place (as can anywhere dominated by USAnians). But the England section (way down the bottom of the forum list) is a little oasis where there are plenty of helpful people.

Hello Andrew mate ;)

You running the English Championship tonight? just so you know its Chris W!

Andrew has said everything that needs to be said about iRacing, Be patient and dont treat it like a 'Game' It takes a long time to be able to run comfortably with other cars on track.

And he is right about the 'feel' of the sim, I cannot play any other sim now, they seem so sterile compared to iRacing.

Oh and prepare to lose....a lot! :)

Im on and off, currently waiting for a promo code to re-sub or something for old time members, my only advice i can give, is give enough room and that little extra, sometimes you may encounter a lag spike or they might encounter one, and they appear on front end and you get penalized for it, so more or less give that little extra. Also just practice and generally follow faster guys and pick up their lines and go from there.

I was tempted to write "game" instead of game in my opening post :D What I really need to do, is get better at oval racing, was playing a passworded hosted race last night at Charlotte Speedway I think, my car setup was screwed, was hitting the end of the last gear too early and getting capped, even when drafting I wouldn't get any faster. Someone else actually mentioned this to me while racing, was quite interesting that he managed to notice (I wasn't really any slower when not in a tow). Anyway, this talk ended quickly as some people touched (this was a decent race, no unnecessary fighting going on) and I ended up coming around the corner to find a car spinning in the middle of the track... then I started flying :|

Was amusing in a way :P

Any suggestions on how to setup cars, I have NO clue what I would need to change

EDIT: I have no issue with lines really after a few practice runs, just car setups screw me over

Regarding Setups,

Im not really an Oval racer, although im enjoying it more and more.. My car of choice is the Star Mazda that I can setup to my liking more or less instantly now.

Oval setups are a bit of an enigma to me though, and I just use setups that have been shared or put on the forums until i find one im happy with.

also download iSpeed from http://www.nessoft.com/ispeed

so you can get split times etc

Nah im not an oval racer either, cant stand going the same direction lap after lap, even though i used to play Nascar racing 2003 back in the day lol, Much prefer the feel of the road cars and their tracks, cant wait for the Ford V8SC ill be on that like a shot.

You running the English Championship tonight?

Sadly not Chris. Usually I'm getting ready to go to work when the races are on, so I can only make guest appearances during holidays.

Besides, at the moment the poxy movie competition is destroying my life and especially cockpit time. :D I'm only posting here because it's less painful than editing. And it's even more painful this time because there is no way I'm going to put anything together by Sunday to match this...

I can't see anyone topping that, especially me.

I do have a strong masochistic streak though, and feel obliged to make an effort despite the overwhelming odds. I guess that's the story of my entire 'career' at iRacing. So much effort, so little to show for it. :-)

Another iRacer here :) (Josh Harley)

I actually do some ovals as well, but the only cars I vaguely know how to setup are the Late Model/SK, running the Truck and Impala B this season but just using other peoples setups :p

It's a great sim though, I joined back in June/July 2008, now at 100% content which means I've spent a rather ridiculous amount of money (and that's not including the G25 and PC upgrade...) but unlike any other game I can think of I still play, and enjoy playing, it every week. That to me makes it worth every penny.

I keep trying other sims like LFS, rFactor, even the not-quite-sim Forza 3 on the xbox, and although they can keep me occupied for a few hours maybe, I inevitably go back to iRacing, it just feels 'right' in comparison.

Im exactly the same, a 100% - er, I dont even run half the track/cars but really want to support them.

I have been gaming a long time and this, like you, is the only thing I can come back to day after day. its no longer 'gaming' to me. Its like a hobby within a hobby!!

I wish i could say im a 100%r after all this time first subbed in 2008-08-29 according to the order history, and ive yet to purchase anything lol although i want the Jetta and when it comes the V8SC, but along with those you have to buy the tracks the series races in, gets quite expensive after a while. Anyway, i cant find a re-sub promo code, although they had one last month which i missed the mail for :( gutted. 3 months away its been toooo long lol.

Thats an interesting download. do you know of any other sites/apps that i could use with i-racing say on another monitor ?

Thats the only thing I use a lot, everything else needed is in the sim afaik.

The jetta is great fun btw, Very close racing. Remember the V8 is on the way, and the williams F1 car ;)

Gonna need to get up the ranks before the F1 car is released, love my open wheelers. Guessing all the series for F1 would be Class A/Pro

If you're in already there is a deal if you pre-order Philip Island and the V8, get a $6 credit to put towards your next purchase

IMO the best iR experience is the Late Model on road circuits. Been doing a private league on Sat eves (ORO) when I can and it's the hosted (private) races that made the difference for me. I can't quite grok the SR/iR things and I seem to racer slower and have more accidents than in hosted sessions where they are not applicable.

I'm also enjoying the World Tour Specials they've been doing. Winning my split in the Corvette made my day ( from 23rd on the grid :) )

Well ive folded in and re-sub'd, Kevin Olver race name, looks like im stuck with the soltice for a while till i can afford the Jetta and tracks needed, £79 :( but at least the tracks will carry over to the other series so purchasing the cars wont be as expensive.
