iRacing

It was around 70 before so I'll try lowering it to around 60 and see what thats like. Just scares the crap out of me when I see the car behind coming straight into the back of me at high speed :p

Finally managed to get my lap time down to 2.33.xxx around Road America, been doing 2.34s for the last few days. Sebring tomorrow though...which is also when my pedals arrive.

Talking about temptation to buy cars... that Radical is getting more and more tempting, even more so now that I have pretty much every track that it does.

You will love the radical. but beware the car takes some real skills to drive really fast, far past my level of skill level anyway. Im still miles off the Aliens in it. But what a great car.

Interlagos is a nice track, never been a favourite of mine in or racing games. But it yields more grip than Sebring, that's for sure. I think the whole of iRacing could do with higher resolution/detailed textures on the grass, buildings and other trackside objects. But when you're racing you don't rally notice, so it's probably wasted on anything other than replays.

I find the temptation to buy cars is tempered when you look at the tracks they race on. There's a lot of tracks in some series I just hate (Mid Ohio, Mosport, Road Atlanta, Lime Rock, VIR)

In fact I'd go as far as to say that a lot of weeks when I look through the series I'm eligible for I either own the car and hate the track or don't own the car and love the track.

I think it's iRacing's way of making me buy more content.

How can you hate Mosport. Brilliant bit of tarmac the second bend and Moss are brown pants moments every laps The sector 3 sweepers are awesome, with a great last bend that hit correctly brings a huge smile to the face.
Radical @ Mosport as to be my second fav combo after Lotus 79 @ Oulten Park.

But i agree with the other point. 100% agree on that one.

Another Sebring race completed.

Started 8th and finished 3rd (in class), 0 inc. Really happy with 0 inc for a 50 minute race in such a fast car on a low grip circuit.

Shaded my best lap time by a tenth.

But I wasn't really pushing, just trying to lap clean and consistent.

Great game :D:D:D:D:D:D

I'm just waiting for the next bad race when you consider quitting again :p

Probably week 4 when it's Brands Hatch. Never driven it in iRacing and always struggled on the full circuit in other sims.

Then week 5,6,7 and 8 when it's Mosport, Laguna, Mid Ohio and Road Atlanta. :D:D:D:D

At least there's Watkins Glen to look forward to.

Don't own Barber, Indianapolis or Sonoma.

Never driven Barber in any sim.

I've driven the other two a few times in other sims, but don't know them well at all.

ANyone up for some GT practice tonight ?? Just checked and its at Oaky so we all have that. Would love to do Interlagos but im stone cold broke till the end of the month.

Whats it like in the Mp4 ? Worth getting a ear bashing off the mrs if I spend any more money on the pc or iracing this months lol ?

Can't practice tonight, it's TV night with Mrs Llama.

Might have time to squeeze in a race at Interlagos while she's in the bath.

Interlagos is a decent track in the MP4, I'm loosing time in the Senna esses, and the two slow corners further around the lap. I know what I want the car to do, it's a case of putting in the laps to actually being able to execute it.

Hi, I'm progressing through this thread but it is massive so forgive if I go over anything.

I've signed up for a month for a trial to see what it is like. I'm coming from F1 2012 and looking for something a bit rawer and more sim. I like karting IRL and generally open wheel racing floats my boat for preciseness and general experience.

I'm racing with a G27 at the moment.

I've only done some tests and only have the cars that come with the standard package. None are open wheel so I can't help feeling I'm missing out on something. Not interested in oval racing in the slightest.

Some questions if I may:

The mx5 feels like it locks up far too easily - I don't feel I can stand on the brakes much at all as thus its affecting judging my braking distances. Is this normal?

If I buy an open wheeler - which one should I go for as a noob? Will I be able to do anything with it as a rookie?

Any tips welcome.

I'm going back to reading through this mammoth thread now :p

You need to get through the rookie class and get a D licence before you can race any other cars. The Skip Barber is available to race once you've got your D licence. It's a bit of a handful, but as other guys here will testify it rewards you after you've put in the practice laps.

My best advice is to forget everything you've learned from racing F1 cars in other games. Driving the Mazda you can't stand on the brakes, bang through three down shifts in two seconds and expect the car to say ok then. Drive it like a real car, progressive braking and acceleration, no need to over rely on engine braking and keep the steering input as smooth as possible. Slow in, fast out is a decent mantra to drive by in iRacing in most cars.

Don't bother racing for position in the rookie races. Start from the back or the pits, keep out of trouble and on the black stuff. You'll be out of rookie class sooner than later if you stick to that.

The MX-5 doesn't lock up easily - it has ABS. If you're feeling the wheel vibrate violently as you stand on the brakes, you've pushed too hard as that is the ABS cutting in and you'll be losing time. Therefore it's a very good car to learn how to brake more progressively - the optimum brake pressure you need to find is simply just above this vibration. If you feel like you should be able to push the pedal harder before reaching this point, you've discovered why brake pedal mods and load cells are so popular. The standard G27 brake pedal is simply not strong enough to simulate a realistic brake pressure.

The Skip is the ideal first open-wheel car to buy. Very rewarding to drive.

Every race I do at the minute is a disaster... Just tried to do a race in the Star Mazda and it was going well until someone didn't break and went flying into the back of me...

I refuse to race at Sebring in the Skippy because its just horrible :p

Well I entered two GT Races last night after very little practice or setup. Never really been a huge fan of Oaky Long but man is it a blast in a GT car. Anyway did a quick 45 minute practice with race fuel on board before the 9pm race.

Managed to pick the track up pretty quick and build a setup that worked really well and I was able to do 29's only a second off the Aliens with race fuel on board so I was more than happy with that seeing as they run like 3 gals for that hot lapping, I was dragging 26 gals around with me :D

Anyway entered the 9pm started 24th postion :D out of 26 so couldn't be happier as I was going to start from the pits being my first race in the MP4 for a couple of weeks. But ill take the last but one row.

Race went really well for me managed to pass near 20 other cars and finished 7th in quite a strong SOF race clocking in a 1:29.553 race time which I was more than happy with. Took all the info I needed from this session to build my race setup, which i did and works really well to be honest if anyone needs it holla at me.
With the new built race set I entered the 1am Gt race this time starting 20th of 34 cars (Missed Q session lapping lime rock park with Liam :()

Race was going well i was picking the other MP4's off one by one. Sitting on a lot of there back ends and pushing them into mistakes. Managed to get up to 3rd in class with about 15 minutes of the race to go, when I see the corvettes closing in to lap us.

I play it safe run a little wide into the up hill hairpin (t4) give the corvette the inside line and bam the idiot runs into the side of me. To keep the car straight now I ahve to point the wheels at a 45 degree angle :( with 4th place right on my backside.

I now had 15 minutes of intense driving to do. Holding 4th place off with some serious damage to my car. I thought of pitting but if I had my race was over anyway. So decided to stay out. Ended up having a brilliant battle with 4th place a guy called Don we crossed the line 15 minutes later less than a second apart, with 2nd place just infront of us who must have been seriously sweating as we closed in on him during the later stages of the race.

Big plus I managed to do a 0inc in the first race would have been another 0inc for the second race if it wasnt for the corvette driver running into the side of me. (He personally said sorry at the end of teh race and held his hands up and admitted he got it all wrong and he was very sorry if it effected my race. It did but o well still had a blast).

I managed to get my B class licence back from this and I will be able to enter the CTC in the Lotus 79 next season :D My Iracting is starting to creep back up also to where it should be. Note to self stay clear of week 13 you will only regret racing it :D

Don't do this you should not be standing on the brakes of an Mx5 the amount of rookies I see who brake far to hard and far to earlier is nuts. Its all about progression and keeping tyeh MX5 balanced. I barley ever use more than a quarter of the brake travel distance when racing the MX5. Thats the optimal braking zone. Stap on it and all you do is engage the ABS making your wheel vibrate like a tuned up ladies toy. Increase your braking distance dramatically and slow your exit speed out of the bend.

Its all about applying the brake just enough to take the speed off turn the car in then hit the loud pedal as you apex nice and slowly on the loud pedal though again, nice and slowly on the loud pedal.

The MX5 its a ladies car, treat it like a lady and you will get the best out of her. Treat her rough and she will wiggle her back end do a few 360s and leave you in the tire wall.:p

Trying to decide what to do this week... don't really like any of the track/car combos. Might get Twin Ring Motegi and just practice the Lotus 79 all week for the hell of it :p
