iRacing

I can only dream of lap times like that atm mustard :( Only just got under 2 minutes while keeping it on the track.

I was doing those sort of times only earlier this week. Was doing quite a lot of test laps to learn the layout, but I'm finding the best way (for me at least) to quicker lap times is actual racing; trying to be reasonably quick and keep it clean at the same time. When I'm doing test laps with nothing at stake I'm tempted too often to really go for it, resulting in messy laps.

Not sure about the cup but in the roadster i change just after the first red light as come on majority of the time, I drive her with an H shifter so the time it takes me to move my hand from wheel then engage the next gear is done before it hits the limiter. I sometimes go slightly early or late there's not much in it. The peak power is around the green light area. Using the 5 speed box in the roadster if im tailing someone in there draft Ill change before the 2nd red light is even close to coming on to help me get the pass done.

You don't need to scream the hell out of her. Sometimes you may want to run the full length of the gear on a hill for example ill change as late as possible.

If that makes sense.

Fuel the odd gallon here and there wont make a huge difference. But every bit of weight will effect, acceleration, top speed, braking times, tire wear, and handling. Run as much as you need +1 gallon to be safe no more in sprint races.

Just going to look at my Laguna time now not sure what your 1:48 time means

Edit
According to Iracing my best time in the MX5 Roadster at Laguna is a 1:43.432 with the FIXED SETUP.

If your 1:48 is right then hit me up I should be able to help you find at least a second or 4.

A guess at where you are going wrong. Braking to late to hard, taking to much speed into the bend and not enough out. Plus a host of other things that will be unbalancing the MX5 as you push her to your limit. You just have to be smooth and not loose speed, as little steering as possible. No stamping the Throttle, roll it on and off, braking very smoothly and no more than a quarter of what the brake as in it. Unless it a hairpin after a very long straight you just dab her.

Lagunas a bugger :D But I do find it fun in the MX5

You always want to shift at the last possible moment in the mx5, you're only losing time if you shift earlier. Fuel makes next to no difference in the mx5 until you're taking on 10g or so. Tire wear is also a non issue, the only thing u need to look out for is overheating. You could drive 100 laps of a track and the tyres would still be capable of the same lap time on lap 100 that they were on lap 3.

Will give that a try mate, I also need to tweek my wheel settings I think as when I put full lock on (even going very slow) the car seems to flip out.

Just had my first race that was streamed with commentary :D I finished 7th although I was 6th and the pressure got to me and spun it on the last lap.

I really love the Lotus 79 community.

Well, done about 4 races I think this week, my frist week in iracing. I seem to start about 3rd/4th with my qual time so I'm near the front. Sadly I've fallen off the track the first two eraces and ended up about 6th or 7th.

Then, my first race today, I came second! Which I'm chuffed out. It was easy enough, I was close to the lead for quite a few laps after 2nd place fell off the road and I managed to hold position and pull away from the rest for most of the race until 4 laps from the end I ended up losing a bit of time going wide (wheel moved, then the pedals moved!) so I just cruised it home in second happy and got a bit of safety rating back.

However I went in for the next race, got a bad start but kept it clean. Car behind me was drafting me up the hill before the first corner at about lap 3 and I was all the way over to the wall so they had room to pass me. Suddenly as he was alongside me there was contact and a WTF moment as both cars got ruined into the opposite barrier. I ended up disconnecting I couldn't be bothered carrying on.

I checked the replay and there's daylight between the cars then there just seems to be contact and I look like I've been t-boned by a ghost and then hit his car. Odd as I was turning left lol. I can only assume it was a latency thing as he was rather close to me. Shame really, he was relaly fast so I ssume he had rank and should have known a bit better but never mind.

I'm getting better and better at being consistent. Race laps are about 1:46/1:47 in the Cup which is steady enough to bring it home in a good position with a bit of luck. Setting the wheel to 900 degrees has helps loads. Much more detail in the steering. Thanks for that one and the other advice. I am enjoying it although would like a different track soon! :)

Had a disaster of an oval race today. May avoid the smaller oval tracks in the stock series. So many crashes that you can't avoid. I had a 4x collision whilst on the grid as someone decided to go into first gear full speed into the back of me whilst we were all stationary so before we even moved I was damaged.

Crashes galore around the second corner which I couldn't avoid and a large SR loss. At least road and oval SR is different as I rarely have any SR loss on road tracks.

Beginning to wonder about oval and whether I should just invest the money into road tracks now...

I can't do with the oval racing. I just didn't gel with it when I tried it so left it at that haha. Might have a crack with it tomorrow.

I find with gaming, or in fact most aspects of life, that you need to do what makes you happy. Or just walk away then come back to it. Practice makes perfect in life, so long as you;re willing to try new ways of learning if your not happy with the results you're already getting.

Whilst getting to 2nd place I mentioned earlier I tried the video setting on my 60D which will do 12 mins of footage (4GB cap for some reason):

Video didn't come out well despite plenty of light. Should be much sharper and lighter. But that's my setup. Yes, my wheel tried to dismount a few times and my pedals were moving... and yes... I did read a txt whilst on the straight haha. I've since remounted my wheel and moved the pedals. Much better. Screen is 27" and wheel is kind of offset. I'm cramped for space sadly and this works best for me at the moment. Might try moving the screen to the middle of my desk but I doubt it will make much difference to my driving.

Also I set up my FFB. Well I at least adusted it loosely to the guide. I didn't go to the extreme of 3rd party apps to get the best figures but my first lap out was quicker than I have gone before IIRC. I think I will be more consistent with this setup. Cheers!

One other important thing is fov. IRacing has a calculator to help figure out your ideal fov, I did it yesterday and my lap times have improved by around 7 tenths and I'm a bit more consistent.

I have been messing around with my FF and FOV settings and it seems to have helped, I can now get around Laguna Seca in 1.52/3 average :)

The FOV settings seem a bit weird though, I input my monitor size in mm and then it seems to reset into inches????

If enough people are around it could be fun to host a session tomorrow night on maybe a free track with 1 or 2 free cars so even people who haven't bought content can join us.

If we can all agree on a time/cars/track since I don't like many of the free ones.

I can't do Sunday evening UK time as I'll be at work, but hopefully you guys have a good one!

I bought the Star Mazda today to give it a go. Had to check if driving aids were somehow turned on as it grips the track crazily well compared to the Skippy. I couldn't get the thing to spin out! Is it a bit too easy to drive or does Laguna just happen to suit it well? Looking forward to getting my C class so I can race with it. Should be this week :)
