iRacing

lol weird one I actualy had my first go in months now my internet is sorted was just coming to bump this thread.

All I can say to anyone interested If you are a racing fan and down own Iracing its sacrilege. I think I've tried all the sims out there but pcars, none come anywhere near Iracing. Specially with the new steering. I was actually blown away last night at how realistic the car and steering feel now.

It was awesome before, now its I cant even think of a word to describe it. All I can say is I ended up spending about 6 hours lapping on myself when all I intended to do was come on to kill half an hour. :D

@Spunkey just get a 3 month trial for now mate incase you hate it, which you wont you will fall in love, once you have it setup hit me up, i'm Ocuks rookie trainer/MX5 don. I can teach you to drive the mx5 well and get out of rookie cup.

Skill then can teach you to become fast in other cars. I'm still learning that myself, Skill, schools me in the Radical etc. So i may not be the best person to teach you that car.

Kinda depends what you're after, AC looks pretty stunning, and if netKar Pro is anything to go by then the physics will be fantastic.

However on the other hand if netKar Pro is anything to go by he'll take everyone's money and leave them hanging with a half-finished product :p

Realistically though it's likely that, at least initially, AC will be the better sim, however the huge selling point of iRacing is the online racing/ranking system, this puts it in a league of it's own compared to other sims. imo.

Hmm okay, well I'll wait I think simply because with A levels around the corner I shouldn't really be dumping too much time into it, but I'll re-evaluate come summer when I have a bit more time to get into a game seriously.

It's really worth trying it out for 3 months, I raced a lot on GTR and GT5 but most of all, LFS. LFS was very good for the money, and I still regard it as second best when compared to iRacing, Netcarpro, AssetoCorsa, Project Cars etc.

It is expensive, but it gets updated frequently and nothing really comes close physics wise, and I like the graphics too. Be warned about the graphics though, see my above post!

SR is very easy to gain so long as you keep an eye in your mirrors as rookies tend to like rear ending people :p

You've got the right idea though, get it after exams, my uni exams are 6 weeks away and i'm spending way too much time on this thing.....

Still can't drive the skippy for ****

Everytime I do I get just get ****ed off, poxy car!

Be very smooooooooth with it, and non't - whatever you do - lift off half way around a bend, it HATES trail braking and loves cornering with a bit of throttle applied.

Also, try lowering the front end and stiffening the rear ARB, counter intuitive I know, but it makes a good difference as the tyres are the same all round with a big heavy engine over the rear.

Is this game dead? Just started playing this week and hadmy first proper go this evening and all the practice sessions are empty. There were only 4 hosted sessions. I stumbled across a 24 car oval race which was random and stupidly decided that I was ready after practicing this evening. Made it to the 9th lap before spinning off which isn't a bad thing but the whole of the pack happened to be coming round that exact corner to lap me at that time. Cue chaos and cars flipping everywhere. I was just happy turtling at the back to get my SR up but that failed!

Not dead no, but not the best of time to start playing :p

Two things really, firstly is timezones, although there is a fair few Aus/NZ members the vast majority are in the US or EU timezones which are the most popular, but it does depend on series, the Aussie V8's get best participation in Aus times, unsurprisingly, others like the Skippy/Star Mazda go official pretty much every slot.

But the second thing is the week, I don't know how much you know about the iRacing seasons but there's basically 4 seasons per year, consisting of 12 weeks of official races and 'week 13' which is mostly a time to either **** around in non-SR/IR sessions or a time to not bother racing. Now we're currently right at the end of Week 12 (midnight GMT tonight is the end of the season) so pretty much everyone has done their racing for the week and a lot of people sit out Week 13 (I do personally).

Also worth noting that you don't get any SR or IR in hosted sessions.

So yeah, basically just wait till a week tomorrow, then it should be back to plenty of races around, although practice sessions can still be sparse as lots of people just do offline practice.

Thanks. Perfect timing then! A week of offline practice sounds like a good idea anyway haha. I have a G27 but still find the cars slip and slide all the time. I swear the tracks are made of ice when I play but watching others they fly round so I must be missing something or have very slick tyres haha!

They do slip and slide, to get the best times you need to find the point just around where they start sliding, too much and you lose time and can overheat the tyres.

There's also the tyre model which is a kinda odd/broken at the moment, it has many good factors but also the main major flaw is the temperature modelling, the heat build-up is somewhere near right but the grip levels are better when cold, so the first lap will feel great and then it will start slipping more during laps 2/3 but then settle down once the top temps are reached.

It is just practice though, I've not driven the MX-5 (assuming you're doing road stuffs) in a long time and over various iterations of the tyre model so probably can't help much, but ultimately keep doing laps, aim first for consistency and then for speed, but just learn the car/tyres/feedback.

With they tyres, there is a new software build tomorrow, which does include a couple of things with the tyres which may or may not have a big effect.

iRacing emailed me a few days ago about buying credits and getting 25% extra or something. Has that offer ended? If not could someone trust me the codes :)

TVM

I'm in limbo with iRacing, I don't have time to commit but wouldn't mind a race or 2 a month (literally) however the cost is prohibitive. Sure, it's not a lot but I'd feel like I wasn't getting value for money and so would resent it.

I always miss out on the deals too, never seem to get them via email.

I paid $59 (about £37 at the time) for a full years membership through an offer which isn't too bad considering I probably only play for a few hours at a time.

I'm currently driving the McLaren in the GT and Grand-AM, depending on whether I own and/or like the track that week.

I've found the McLaren to be one of the easier cars to drive of the ones you get in the game and the few I've bought (McLaren, Riley XX, Skip Barber, Williams F1, Radical SR8)

The thing I do like about iRacing is the racing is about the cleanest you can get online and you are pretty much guaranteed to get a full grid for any race you enter.

Yeah very true, the driving points/standards system isn't perfect but it doesn't half make for super close racing without the punting.

After a race I often find myself in a sweat with a raised heart - not to the level or real racing, but the instincts and sensation/adrenaline are there!

You still can't beat iRacing for online racing.

... you're making me want to re-sub now.
