I have this sudden urge to get back into IRC again, since I quit clan gaming, got a WoW addiction, I've not really had the "social" aspect of the internets apart from facebook, which is barely social, it's like reddit vomitting onto a photo album of friends children..

Is QNet still the place to be? All the channels I used to loiter in are probably dead, #quake3.uk for instance :p

I've been on IRC for 20+ years, idling on about 20 channels. I even use it for work, as I convince people working remotely with me to "stick around" and idle on IRC, it's a LOT less intrusive than skype and they other "needy" instant messaging.

Been online in many a IRC server/channel for well over 15 years now. Apart from when my server reboots. Which is irritating.

We also have a company one for team communications and cross team communications.

Check out http://grove.io

Stopped using is around 2006 ish when the Quake 3 community dropped off significantly - before that I'd used it for a good 10 years or so with almost 24x7 uptime using a BNC lol.

Every day, I'd be lost without IRC as its how I communicate with like minded sys admins and how we share our knowledge to help one another :D

Yeah IRC is excellent for this. Saved myself many hours on problems just by talking a few minutes to someone who has solved a similar problem. Besides sharing technical knowledge in real-time and arranging clans wars I can't really see why anyone would use IRC nowadays.

I use it occasionally, keep meaning to install WeeChat or some other console based client but i never get round to anything. Great for getting quick answers to linux problems.
