I've been on IRC for 20+ years, idling on about 20 channels. I even use it for work, as I convince people working remotely with me to "stick around" and idle on IRC, it's a LOT less intrusive than skype and they other "needy" instant messaging.

Sounds great, shame it will never happen where I work. One of the best things about IRC is that you can leave it a while before replying to people without feeling rude.

Freenode is a popular IRC server for programming/technical stuff. There is a channel for most languages and frameworks. For example if you want to discuss something about Java then join #java.

Yeah been awhile but it was a great platform that I don't think really reached its potential - or perhaps I never got the most out of it.

I think perhaps with the closure of site downloads we could see a return to the IRC days?

Was there ever a risk of security with IRC though - what was the protection most people used. Some kind of port blocking springs to mind.
