Ironman UK 2013 Training/Progress Thread

I took your advice Thomas and did the team true spirit training day yesterday. Definetly worthwhile just to get vaguely farmiliar with the course, where you can go fast, slow, dangerous bits etc :) I only did one loop as I had places to be in the afternoon. Flew up Sheephouse lane, <3 compact.

Swam 3.88KM in 1:05.

Right, time for breakfast then the last 'proper' small bike big run brick :D

Niceone, glad you enjoyed it, loved it when I did it. Good to get the full swim and then out on the bike too. Nice swim time that's very good. Bit worried it might be a non wetsuit swim if this weather continues. That'll slow everyone up a load.

Yeah sheephouse is no trouble with a compact is it, just sit and spin it out. Will be being careful the first time up though to ease myself in.

Managed a half marathon this morning and felt pretty decent despite getting pretty dehydrated by the end. That'll be my last big training run now, will be all lessening volume from here on out.

Getting seriously nervous and excited now, so close!

I doubt it, PF is deeper so I've heard for one thing, plus you can always wear a wetsuit, they can't force people to not... can they?? :|

I am also looking forward to it, taper feels quite agonizing already as I just want to do more!! 45min bike then 15min run hardly feels worth bothering about on Wednesday!! :p I have been advised by a friend that has completed several IM Wales in sub 12's - whatever you do STICK TO YOUR TAPER.

What are the wetsuit restrictions?
- Wetsuits cannot measure more than 5 mm thick.
-Wetsuits are permitted if the water temperature is up to (and including) 76.1 degrees Fahrenheit (24.5 degrees Celsius) or colder.
-Wetsuits will be prohibited in water temperatures greater than 83.8 degrees Fahrenheit (28.8 degrees Celsius).
-Athletes who choose to wear a wetsuit in water temperatures between 76.1 degrees Fahrenheit (24.5 degrees Celsius) and 83.8 degrees Fahrenheit (28.8 degrees Celsius) will not be eligible for Age Group awards, including IRONMAN World Championship slots or Rolldown slots.
-Full wetsuits are permitted (arms and legs covered).
-The De Soto Water Rover wetsuit is PROHIBITED
*NOTE: ANY ATHLETE ELECTING NOT TO RACE MUST NOTIFY TIMING IMMEDIATELY. ABOVE ALL, THE SAFETY OF EACH SWIMMER IS OUR PRIME CONCERN. A FULL SWEEP OF THE COURSE WILL BE MADE DIRECTLY BEHIND THE LAST SWIMMER. VISUAL AID WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE LIFEGUARDS, DIVERS, CANOES, AND KAYAKS, BUOYS AND AQUATIC CRAFTS THAT LINE THE COURSE.

So worst case is you can still wear one but wouldn't qualify for a Kona slot... that ain't happening for me anyway! :D

Nice little write up. Is that your spare tube strapped behind your seat? That is probably where I'll put mine. Any tub tips for a tub newbie? Is it pre stretched and glued? Sram rear mechs look odd! That bike is a beast compared to my old thing.

Also, I had been working on the old severn bridge (up until 3 weeks ago) for the last few months... I know it very well, if you carry on over into chepstow then head up the B4235 you can try and take my KOM off me ;) Some really great riding around there.

Yeah, when I got the bike they had vittoria cx pro tyres on. I chose to change them to continental competitions so I could run a 19mm on the front and a 21mm on the rear. So I just use one of the spare vittoria's as my spare on the bike just ziptied up to my saddle. Its got plenty of glue still on it, and the rims are all taped up with tub tape. If in the event of a puncture should just be a case of ripping the old one off and inflating the spare. Then I'll have to take it pretty steady if that happens.

There's a specific way to fold them to get them as small as possible, I used this guide https://picasaweb.google.com/108112939684385339347/FoldingATubularTire#

I've got mine all set up with the valve extender already on too so no faffing there should the worse happen on course.

Thanks, I absolutley love it, wish I was as fast as it looks though!

Ah really, will have to see if I can nab that if I head over that way again! Did that on what felt like the hottest day of the year. Was dying for food an water by the time I got near Chepstow, so just ended up stopping at a Texaco garage and stocking up before heading straight back.

Not long now and my taper is already getting to my head lol!!! I feel I need to be doing more but know I don't. Very very impatient right now.

I am doing the sprint at the London Tri on Saturday so that should use up a little bit of energy but I will be taking it easy, just a last test run so to speak.

Just been on the tritalk forum and someone said the lake was 19 degrees at the moment so can't see there being any issue with the wetsuit. Really need to wear one in case I need to take a rest at any point!!

I went for a health MOT at Nortumbria University last week where they test your VO2, weight, body fat, stregth etc to see if I had improved from my last one in November. Really pleased as I've lost over a stone in weight, body fat is down to 10% (it was over 20% a couple of years ago) and my VO2 has gone up from 63 ml/Kg/Min to 76 ml/Kg/Min. It was good to see such improvements and I feel I am in the best shape I have ever been which will hopefully push me on to finish IM.

niceone Dolmio, that's awesom you can see your stats improving like that! Know what you mean about feeling impatient. Gearing up for my usual 6hour plus saturday ride is not going to be the same knowing it'll only be two hours!

I've just been for a last minute health MOT of a different type. I went to the doctors last week after getting concerned at how low my heart rate was getting. I was measured in the surgery at 32bpm :/

Got referred to a cardiologist as they wanted to be able to clear me for Ironman, and just had an ECG and scan and it all looks normal. Got given a 24hour tape to wear, so providing that throws up nothing crazy I'm good to go. :)

Interesting process if nothing else.

Yeah not sure it's a particularly accurate indicator of my fitness really :/ I'm still wearing the 24hour tape, but they have provisionally ok'd me providing the tape shows nothing out of the ordinary which I'm told is the most likely case. The cardiologist is going to call me later this week to discuss. I went for a run with it on last night too, so should give them some good data hopefully.

Haha, always next year!

Too early to post this?!

Wouldn't be too bothered if it turned out like that, as long as the rain holds off until the run at least.

Too early for accuracy but interesting to look! Dry, and I'll take both sets of wheels so wind or no wind is fine :) I thrive in foul conditions!

Had a good week so far, two KOM's on the bike this week on sections I've been eyeing up for a while... finished my bike session this morning and was rolling back into my village stretching off and got a rear flat... BUMS. No foreign objects that I could see, have washed the rim out and will mount a new tyre after I've stretched my spare tubular overnight.

Niceone pete, pain about the puncture. Was that on your new tubs?

I was told that the bike course there is always a head wind on the section just going past belmont resevoir. Not sure how true that is though.

It was on my normal clinchers, Conti gp400's with conti standard tubes :(
Still slightly hesitant about using the tubs for race but I should go all out I suppose!

Followed your guide

TuOTLc1l.jpg

All wrapped up, used a velcro tab that was previously used to secure the end of ski's. Will tape it somewhere, probably behind the seat post if the decision is made to ride on the tubs :)

I've been along past that reservoir. It's always windy yes but not a particularly long section.
