is 2gb not enough?

in 2 -3 years 2gb may not be enough for 1080p would be a better crystal ball post
Since 2GB 690's are awesome at 1440p (Kaap i see says 1600p and he should know)
i dont see 1080P surpassing 1440p Vram requirements within a year,Also have to rember most game dev's arent going to suddenly make games that require 3gb of vram in the next year and therefore cut out at least 50% of gamers out there that dont have 3gb+cards

So best to stsy away from the nvidia 770 2gb cards and look at the 3gb amd cards?

It depends how long you want to keep the card to be honest. 2GB is currently fine. What the future holds? Nobody knows. Although even if you are hitting your VRAM limit and have the GPU grunt to push acceptable frame rates you can always dial MSAA down one notch and this often frees up a huge chunk of memory.

The AMD cards are probably more future proof in that they a) have more memory bandwidth and b) take the memory side of it out of the equation. Unfortunately, the AMD cards are a touch overpriced at the moment due to the mining bubble.

Game developers arent suddenly going to make games that require 2Gb of VRAM and cut out at least 50% of people that have 1Gb.... Oh... They already did...

If developers didn't push requirements the industry would never move forward.

I forgot about all the games coming out and have been out in the last 4 years with TrSSAA as an option :D. I'm sure if I look hard enough I can find a stat that puts Man Utd at the top of the table :D.

Point being it's not all that relevant to the question in the thread.

ALL games have had TrSSAA for the last 5-6 years.

It's a matter of going into AMD's CCC and turning it on...

It doesn't require any tricks, hacks or reg edits... just go into the driver panel and turn it on.

TrSSAA does WONDERS for Crysis and its abundance of foliage and alpha textures.

They haven't though. My friend plays BF4 on a 1GB 5870 just fine on medium to high settings. Not everyone plays with ludicrous amounts of AA just for the sake of it. Once you're past MSAA 4x the benefit in image quality isn't that large even in stills never mind about actually playing the game.

Exactly. Nobody does that.

Or not many people at least - definitely not your average gamer. We've had this discussion ages ago.

My mates playing games fine on his GTX570
You can turn settings down, ya know? It's also worth nothing that most games (excluding the obvious few) that exceed 2GB VRAM also require a fair chunk of grunt to go with that. As an example my mate who's rocking a GTX570 when he turns settings too far he'll drop into unplayable FPS before he hits his VRAM limit.

Well in fairness, I enable downsampling in some games, so 2GB will not be enough when I run just shy of 4K res. In fact, 4GB isn't enough either, as when I played Crysis 3 at 3200x1800, it used over 4.6GB.

Exactly what games wont run 1080p on a 1GB vram card?
Never found a game so far i cant run on my 5870

Battlefied 3, 4

Crysis 3

GTA 4

Hitman absolution

Tomb Raider

Witcher 2

Sleeping Dogs

Any of the STALKER games

Want me to keep going?

And you can't run games maxed out on that 5870 to exceed 1gb of VRAM anway.
