Yes it's enough for most titles, even at 4K, you can always turn settings down. But we all know 8GB-10GB is more than enough for a high end GPU.

My sarcasm detector just flickered...
Yeah, been thinking of buying a nice new high hz 4k screen that can do both gsync and freesync and go AMD this time, though I'm happy with my current 1440p gsync screen.. and 4k still isn't very easy to run if we're talking demanding stuff. But at least the option is there if i want it in future. I imagine when Nvidia release cards with extra vram there will be a few selling them off and upgrading. It's enough for now, but I seriously doubt it'll be enough in two years time. Nvidia have really stiffed us on the vram this time.
All that means is 11GB is not enough. Need 16 or more!!pretty crazy. Not surprising though, the 2080ti seems to tank in game as well without dlss.
15:26s
Sub 40fps average at 1080p with a 2080ti. yeehaaaw. I''m not even sure if that's with the texture pack or not
I'm sorry but he does UE game development with a 8 core, 16gb ram system... Least of my concerns for development is the vram on the GPU on that rig. But if you can find a 3080 in stock get it instead.I was looking to upgrade my sons rig from 1070 to 3070 but this whole 8GB concern is.... concerning! He plays everything but is also studying game design and development so uses UE4 on daily basis, implementing RT into his projects going forward is a requirement also. His current setup is X570, 3700X, 16GB 3800C16, 1440p GSYNC.
Any advice greatly appreciated?

Didn't notice but now that you mention it, not very surprising since there seems to be a few goal post shifters aboutBy the way, did you notice the 10GB is not enough lead Dave just went and purchased a 3080? Cracked me up when I saw it in the 3080 owners thread. He upgraded his 16GB card to a 10GB one. Lol!

In testing only 3GB is typically allocated, so there is an argument that 3GB is probably sufficient in most cases for high end GPUs heading into 2021!Nonsense 4-6gb is clearly all you need!
3070 should be fine, there's only a 2gb difference between 3070 and 3080, although could just get the 3090 just to be safe, having said that I didn't think that a lot of the work done in courses were on personal systems and if we're being honest, knowing colleges and universities, it probably won't be intensive enough to even make use of the 8gb... I know my university just did fairly basic stuff which didn't require a ton of hardware but maybe his university is different.Yeah he's only 17 and this is his personal computer he uses for completing assigned tasks at home for his current diploma course in game development. He'll be going university next year and I wanted to get him something to replace aging 1070.
Then that's the answer to the question, 3070. It's faster than the 2080 Ti in most rendering tasks, I doubt his son needs more power than that for a course.Price difference barely anything? It's £180 difference. To me, that's the difference between something I can just about justify and something I really can't.

Also, price difference between 3080 and 3070 is barely anything so if you can find a 3080, get it I guess.
I use a 3070 currently because I couldn't get a 3090, yes I can't work with my usual 8k workflow anymore without proxies however, it's absolutely fine for 4k 120 fps h.265 & raw footage, I'm sure it'll be okay for his unreal engine, if anything it should offload to system ram aswell, not that I used unreal engine much.... I mean, people do unreal engine with outdated cards, the ampere architecture is superior to Turing for workstation, if anything a faster CPU would load up unreal engine faster and reduce times tooCOVID means he's working/learning from home remotely these days, I have considered 3080 but that was going over original budget and I'm not sure I love him that much
