Is 9800 GX2 the speed bump we needed?

I agree

what i dont get is the 3870 series has 320 or 640 stream processing units compared to the 8800's 128, yet performs worse in shader intensive games. Just doesnt make sense does it!

The shader clock runs much slower on ATI cards....when you overclock them they get pretty fast...but alas you can only overclock so far. And of course you can overclock the G92 shaders to 2-2.2+ghz

We need a card that has the combined power of 4 9800GX2's, and not using any SLi features, this is what we need.

Correct, we need new cutting edge silicon. New features, new toys. New stuff to play with. G80/G92 bores me to tears now :p

Agreed, just a shame Nvidia don't see it, and are still going to release their 2006 8800's in June/July, but on 55nm processes instead of what they on now, 65's. :D

What year were C2D's released? 2006? Penryns are 2006 C2D's!, Q6600's are 2006 E6600's slapped together.

It seems when ATi catch up to NV and slightly beat NV, like for a small whilse the 3870X2 was the top dog, NV just takes off.

Its just like getting into a car, but the driver takes off, stops down the road, waits for you to get back up to the car then takes off again, its like that at the moment, ATi just cant keep up unless the 4870X2 will have some rocket packs on to it overtakes NV's solution by miles.

This will make GFX refreshing again

ATI say the 38 series GPU's have 320 shaders this is a lie, deceptive marketing.
Infact there are only 64.
Now they are capable of more than one operation per clock cycle up to 5 in theory, but this is never realised in practice.
Plus they only run at core speed.

NV cards have up to 128 shaders per GPU each running much higher than core speed.
An 8800 GTX has 128 shaders running at 1350mhz, the G92's run the shader clock even faster.

Now you can understand why ATI's are so weak in comparison and why they lie about the chips true capabilities.

Until we can play crysis at very high DX10 with a reasonably priced mid-high range graphics card. But by then new games will be out with even more demanding graphics so yes, we will always need more power.

see the crazy thing for me is i dont think we need that big a jump at the moment. I donts ee crysis as a reason to have a more powerful card at all as in my opinion aside from the visuals the game isnt worth an upgrade at all.

The only reason the technology should advance is so that developers have new tools and features available to make the next games better not for something thats out now like crysis which has as much depth as heather mills stocking drawer.

If there is no current hardware that can play a certain game maxed regardless of how good the gameplay is it is a valid reason for more power.

so we want ATi to pull it's fingers out and make something that can beat an ultra on a single card and not 2 joined together,
AMD to release something to wack C2D,
Nvidia to release something new that isn't old gen tech rebranded.
what about Intel? get octo-core out... maybe?

Dont know about that, think its 3 cores and also 4 cores with some sort of weird HT things, I dunno though, just those pics and the Nahalem thread looks like its all 4 cores still :s, is sandy bridge or whatever its called going to be octo core?

Well I know dunnington will get 6 cores....and Nehalem will have 2 to 8, so I think they'll come in all flavors (2,4,6,8)

Dunnington is the Xeon server chip with the different socket, should be out later this year...followed by the desktop Nehalem.
