Is Discord now the "killer" voip program?

Its handy and I use it for a few reddit group but purely for text chat but at the same time I use TS nightly and have done for nearly 10 years and will continue to chip in to the server costs.

My group of friends and I were using a TS server for the last 3 years. For the most part it was fine however it was through Multiplay and they went through a few periods of being DDOS'd so we had periods of downtime on the server. Other than that the quality of TS was good and we all liked it. We switched to Discord at the end of last year and it has been brilliant, the audio quality is fine for us all and it does everything we want it to, big bonus is being free as opposed to paying for TS so we are all really happy with it.

Yeah its mint does everything you want It to. Sound quality is the best ive heard from a voip imo

I've just cancelled my teamspeak server will give this a go and see how it fairs, TS servers are so cheap and quick to spin up that if its gash i can just get another.

It's the best thing out there for online gaming, a great combo of MIRC style chat with upgrades and integrated comms which works perfectly.

We currently use ventrillo still but looking to make the jump across to discord. That split second difference makes all the difference when your making call outs.

Discord is good to build a fully fledged community. Its especially god for streamers with the various bots etc you can create to make announcements / commands for various build tips for certain games and so on.

I like it, but then again, i barely used ts3 before so my opinion may be useless for this thread lol

Last time I/we used it Mumble still had compatibility issues for way more users than Discord or TS3. Personally prefer TS3 for self hosting, not linked to a specific game and usually seems to sound the best overall.

Still unsure how they're going to be profitable.

I can't get my head round this. Mandatory adverts on your 'page' unless you pay? Adverts piped into your chat on the free version? For something like that to be completely free and then to stay that way is unheard of.

They claim they won't head down the advertising route. Which leaves data selling/a huge increase in nitro subs or bankruptcy. They claim they're not selling data and I doubt many people will buy nitro outside the initial hype so I'm genuinely concerned/interested in longevity.

Then again I guess long term they may just Hoover up users by keeping it free and hope to sell to a company that wants the data.

Maybe selling stickers/emotes for chat like some other services do, but I can't see them making too much money off that. Are they trying to evolve into a full social platform?

What's Nitro? Like Discord+ with extra features?

Yeah its their premium plan, IIRC;

*GIF for avatar.
*Increase to 50mb uploads.
*Upload your own emojis to use.
*Badge showing how long you've supported via nitro for.

50mb would be useful for one of my servers but the rest maybe I'm too old to appreciate.

I would LOVE a self hosting solution if they ever change their mind.

Not saying it is for everyone but they could make some money fro that but the support costs may wipe out any additional monies gained.

They seem to be claiming security through obscurity on the basis of self hosting.

I would be happy if it were offered through something like multiplay on that basis we don't have access to server side files and they'd still earn extra whilst we get more stable servers/access to higher quality audio/larger file uploads.
