Is Discord now the "killer" voip program?

Having been using Discord for a while, it has me intrigued.

Being an old fart by gaming standards, I fondly remember when IRC was king and this does fill that niche very well.

As a VOIP client, it gets the job done.

My opinion is that as a complete package, it is greater than the sum of its individual parts and nothing else on the market is close to it as a complete package.

The hosting model is a negative but financial pressures may force them to rethink that perhaps in the future?

There is a crossover between forum software such as what this community uses and something like Discord and Discord does "stand on its toes" and does raise a question of will communities like "OCUK" switch to a more "fleshed out" Discord in the future.

Personally, I would like to see Discord like features implemented on community software such as what OCUK runs. That would be my ideal.

Roger wilco user here...

Over the years it's been roger, ventrilo, mumble, teamspeak now it's discord.

I've had a ventilo server for a few years but now days everyone I speak to is on discord.
It's so fast and easy to join zero effort. Very casual.

It's great pal! We have slowly transitioned over to it from steam.
What makes it so great though? Does it require a server host like teamspeak, or is it more pear to pear like steam? Either way everyone has good things to say about it so I'll check it out, apparently it has a iOS app too, which is handy

It does i use it on my phone regularly IE last night i took a photograph of my screen to take the **** out of Forza horizon 3' ultra wide support :). It's similar to team speak in that it is a hosted server that can be official or self hosted(i think you can self host i could be wrong but i don't see my friend paying for a server :D). It is a lot more functional though for instance im in a few " severs " for instance Pagan for star citizen and playing with a few lads from ocuk, then i also have one that a friend hosts just for random stuff. But there are severs such as dedicated PUBG ones with lobbies of max 2 people for good un disturbed communication with randoms.

And the ability to audio adjust everyone is nice. I do think you would like it if you give it a week or two of your time.

I remember the one and only time I used RW, it was for a clan tryout when I was about 13 :D

So my kids have roped me into playing Fortnite Duos/Squads games with them (I am embarrassingly bad but they don't seem to mind), but the main problem is that we end up shouting to each other up/down the stairs all game - which my wife does not enjoy...

Would I be right in thinking that USB headsets and Discord would be the best and easiest way for us to communicate in game (we have the headsets already)? Or is something better for this limited purpose. One concern is how much control I'd have over who else the kids could be talking to when I'm not with them.

If you administer the server yourself you can limit who joins and can talk.

Yeah I used RW like once and wondered why anyone ever bothered with it.

Most of the clans, etc. I've played with went through the same phases at the same time - mostly starting with Teamsound, Ventrilo, Teamspeak, sudden fascination with Skype from certain people which was quickly dropped as it was really bad for gaming, back to Teamspeak, suddenly Mumble is the "big thing" then dropped for Teamspeak, repeat with Discord, now seems to be a split between Discord and Teamspeak.

Discord is incredible at the moment, it really is a lot better than the old Teamspeak Mumble etc.

Who knows how long it will stay that way though, being a hosted service.

I do worry that they'll turn round in a couple of years time and say '$10 a month or $60 a year for a server' and while some might leave, others will pony up and suddenly they have bulging pockets.

I used to use skype to chat and always had issues with background noise both ends, discord is far superior call qaulity with no background noise from anyones mic.

Also being able to control everyones volume individualy instead of having to ask people to fix their volume is much nicer.

I would never use skype again.

I use Discord for pretty much most things now. It is one of the few applications that is always running on my computer (although I don't use the mobile client as I can't type very well on my phone and the notifications are annoying).

Really for organising gaming communities, it is hard to beat Discord.
