Is it acceptable to be on your mobile while at a check out in a supermarket.

I think its rather rude to do that, can that call not be taken 5 minutes later, we all get far to engrossed with mobile. manners dont cost anything

I used to work on the till as a part time job, I thought it was pretty disgusting when someone comes up to the till on the phone without even acknowledging your existence. Wheres the manners? They aren't machines...

I understand that and although I was looking at her to let her know I wasn't ignoring her, and tbh at the same time it is just a 'checkout job', and I say that having done tons of menial work myself and I understood that with certain jobs you have to put up with stuff until you work your way up.

I work in the restaurant trade and the amount of crap we get off of customers at times is unbelievable but you've got to smile and deal with it as politely as possible, customer relations is very important to me, especially now we are living in a very openly socially connect world.

Important to you? You should be aware of the basic issues then. And so openly socially connected that you couldn't, or were unwilling,to have an actual conversation with somebody physically in front of you. There is a certain irony in this. Nontheless, I don't think it would have been too hard to simply apologise to the cashier if you actually had to carry on the phone convo, although I appreciate everyone has a different opinion on this.

I'm sorry but in that particular environment customers take priority over someones ego/pride, your in that company's retail environment and workers represent that company.

This basically. Used to work on tills. Really great feeling to not even be acknowledged by rude ignorant customers nattering away on their phones...

Lot's of jobs have situations workers may not like but unless it's within the company guild-lines to refuse service if someone is on their mobile then surely the person at the till should just accept that as part of thier contract and care of duty to the customer, it's just part of the job.

Why does the pursuit of capital have to supersede the human condition?

It's wrong. It's so very very wrong.

This is a laughable. Who cares, it might be an important phone call, as long as you aren't rude and say thanks and answer any questions the member of staff asks. If I was a member of staff I wouldn't give a monkies, I would smile at the customer and move on to the next. If people make an issue out of this sort of thing they need to sort out their priorities.

I always end the call as it gets to my turn to be served and I usually apologise for being on the phone too. Being polite goes a long way :)

Then instead of being part of the problem and an ignorant ****, be nice to the lady, pay her some attention when she's serving you and be part of the solution.

My pet hate with mobile phones comes from my job. Working in a busy taxi office with call over lapping call, idiots still choose to call you from the loudest part of a pub/night club then get shirty when you can't hear them and they can't hear you.

Eventually you have no choice but to hang up as communication is impossible. So what do they do keep calling from the same spot.

I'd say it's pretty rude. They're performing a service for you, you can at least show them a bit of courtesy and not yammer on to someone else for the 2 mins they serve you.

It's just lack of manners & rude, simple as that.

Your phone will wait and you can talk to the person in front of you who will give you better service (probably).

Same goes the other way round for the cashier. It's rude and bad manners if chat to others while serving you.

Thank god for self checkout's then that's all I can say, forced trite conversions bypassed.

I acknowledged her with a look and a smile, that should suffice, end of the day technically I've not done anything wrong, as I've said, it's not company policy to refuse service under these circumstances, she should just get on with her job tbh, I'm one of probably thousands of customers she will deal with that day

They aren't really performing a service for you so much as you are paying them for a service, which you could quite easily take elsewhere.

Just because you pay someone for a service doesn't give you the right to be rude to them.

I would not take/make a call when dealing with someone else as it is rude. However, in your exact situation I would have closed down the call and then dealt with the checkout person. I would have been calm and clear but would have sought her manager and made my displeasure at her attitude known. I would accept some responsibility for being on the phone, I would acknowledge that, but I would not accept attitude from anyone as your have suggested and I would deal with it and have on many occasions for it is unacceptable and the leaders of the company would find it unacceptable too.
