Is it just me or have the 'health fascists' turned Supermarket food into bland, tasteless mush?

Everything I buy from these places is just so, well... bland & requires me to add seasoning to it on an industrial scale, to get any flavour from them, latest example being a selection of expensive soups, all of them tasting of basically nothing until being introduced to some salt & pepper.

I suppose if you've grown up with this level of blandness, which seems to be a result of those nanny state politicians in the Blair/Brown era sticking their noses into peoples culinary choices, its no big deal, but for old farts like me who grew up with food actually tasting of something, its crap!

Make it yourself? Season to taste? All pre-prepared food is crap.

You mean politicians like the Conservative George Osborne who introduced the sugar tax

Sweets are the things that have been really hit hard by the food fascists, with many of my old favourites tasting rather bland compared to their old versions. I actually emailed Barretts two years ago to ask them if the recipe for Blackjacks and Fruit Salads had been changed and got this reply from them:-

Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your enquiry.

I can confirm that the recipe has changed several times in recent years to accommodate new food trends and preferences that leans towards a softer chew than in previous years. We have also removed gelatine, milk and the artificial colours and flavours.

I am very sorry that you find the chew less flavoursome than its older counterparts.

Please accept my apologies for the disappointment.

Kind regards,

My local sweet shop, just last month also told me the recipe for pint pots had been changed to a 'vegan-friendly' recipe. Lo and behold they are now also bland - like someone has put a dampener on the flavour. :(

I would be careful about adding salt. All supermarket soup is incredibly salty. If you don't find it salty it is likely that you have dangerously high salt consumption, and are not noticing it. Read the side of the packet, they are very salty.

soup label people should be locked up for labelling as if people eat half a tin of soup.

also, don't get me started on rice in soup.

also, yes it's all bland trash, but mostly because of cost-cutting, and they want you to buy something else to go with it.

imo, huge part of the issue is where you shop, I don't mind M&S or Sainsburys ready meals although it's still necessary to be selective, but at ASDA it's 100% trash-tier.

Bland food is to prepare us for the future, when animals have gone extinct and most sustenance is synthetic or lab-grown processed crap.
Y'all will be looking back on these flavourless microwave meals with great fondness!!

I steer away from the ready made stuff .... criminal levels of salt and sugar in most of it in an attempt to give it a bit of taste, this ones even got Flavour Enhancers (Monosodium Glutamate, Disodium 5'-Ribonucleotides). YUK!

Blair was like 12 years ago….you sure you gone back back enough? Why not blame King Richard?

British cuisine is made fun of around the world of tasting crap and bland….boiled veg until they are mush and brown, eels in jelly, invade half the world but forget to use the spices found in India….(not entirely true but that’s the stereotype)

Are you sure you are blaming the right person or just want to tell everyone that you vote Tory and can’t cook?

Which King Richard? I mean Richard I was crusading, Richard II dealt with the pesky peasants and then Richard III had to fight the War of the roses

MSG is fantastic, 10/10 I suggest everyone buys some. If anything it will reduce your salt intake.

Buy a 5kg tub of MSG and add it to everything
:D

This. Chef approved.
