Is it just me, or is Android a mess

Would be nice if I wasn't reliant on the OEM for security patches.

But, this is the problem that Treble is trying to fix.

No I've said this, security is no longer tied to android main os updates. Security patches and os updates are separate so you should treat them as such. Yo do not need to be on the latest version of Android to have the latest security patches. I can't make it any clearer than that.

And I explained, most manufacturers don't do consistent security updates...

Well if you have used it for 3 years then you know the answer to the title.

It's you. Android is not a mess.

I'm on 8.0 and the guy sitting across from me at work is on 8.1. I honestly couldn't care any less and he didn't seem to bothered about having 8.1 either. It's just a number on a screen.

And your phones are thus less secure than an iPhone. Because I doubt they are up to date security wise.

That is not an answer, it's not even a valid response. I think you are being deliberately obtuse at this point.

What?

Security updates aren't tied to Android versions - but manufacturers don't even do security updates on many of their phones. Go in the Samsung S7 thread and look at the months Samsung skipped a monthly security patch as an example.

There's also this: https://www.theguardian.com/technol...rity-updates-users-smartphone-software-google

You don't even know for sure if your phone is even patched!

Yeah, i do know, because my phone tells me and like i said in a previous reply, samsung list the patch updates in full detail on their website. If my phone says April patch, that's what it's on plus minus other stuff that does/does not apply to my device, which again is detailed on the website.

Samsung missed one patch in their sample, i'm not sure what that proves?

Look, Samsung have been know to miss months yes, nobody said there isnt work to do there. I know it was shaky for the S8/s8+ over christmas but i believe a lot of that was down to the oreo beta testing as that was on more update to date patches than the nougat firmware. It's been consistent since but there is still plenty of work to do to get those patches to the end users on time. No argument there. However, you're just deflecting the argument by concentrating of timely patch updates because your original post was about OS updates, NOT security patches. Since we have now established security is handled separately, that leaves the question you were asked by more than one of us; one you still havent answered: Why do we need the latest OS when security is handled separately? You said right at the start that android has 'so many issues' but so far you've only mentioned security and stubbornly refuse to tells us what these numerous other issues are.

When googles project zero find the majority of bugs in IOS I know which OS I will be using, the one that is made by the guys that find the bugs. Not to mention Apples recent root "feature" in OSx. Then there is the redirection of sms through their iMessage servers, os proxies for reading data on locked devices ,I mean they are pretty much as bad as each other in terms of vunrabilities. If you really think you are more secure on an apple device than an android, windows or any other device then you are pretty delusional. None of them really care about you or your data so why for one second think that they do?

Why do you think monthly security patches exist? Precisely because manufacturers weren't keeping up with updates and hence security was being compromised.

Two reasons. 1) because Google needs to get them out quicker than it released OS updates and 2) the reason you gave above.

Now please answer the question. Pretty please, with cherries on top.

You raise a valid point on the patches OP, yes it has always been a mess but its getting better and Google do need to enforce it better to manufacturers.
BUT
you are way overhyping the issue, Security threats aren't exactly prevalent due to missed patches and given Android occupies over 85% of the mobile market share, you would think, given your rhetoric, that every Android phone would be hacked by now.

I certainly wouldn't switch to Apple and the frankly pathetic iOS because of it and if you were that bothered about it why aren't you using a Blackberry?
Seems like a bit of a wandering dig at Android for the sake of it.

I really want to be an Android user. But there are so many things about it that from iOS, make me wonder whether Google and their partners truly care.

There honestly doesn't seem to be an Android phone that works as well as the iPhone does but has all of its features. Every Android phone not from Google has slow updates, so the Google Pixel 2 I hear you say! Lots of hardware issues, especially on the XL.

There just seem to be so many issues with Android phones, this isn't intended to be a rant. I just find it frustrating.
Its just u that have issues . Android is not a mess

For me personally, I like to have the newest OS because I want to have the newest features. If you don't, then I think you have a fair point.

But in my view, I don't want to be stuck on an old version of the OS that will be abandoned, like Samsung has done many times. Even Google only supports their newest Pixel for three years. It's an improvement granted but Apple has been doing that since the first iPhone arrived.

Just bring up the WiFi Calling and VoLTE situation of you want to prove that Android still has fairly big issues.

Guaranteed support of all network features on iOS, not so on Android.

Came from nexus devices to a gs8 and don't really miss stock android that much.

GS 8 hardware is superb and with google apps all being on the play store + a stock/pixel theme via the galaxy store, my device feels pretty stock as it is.

Ask any developer which OS is easier to develop for as an example, it's a mess. What about all of the GOOGLE apps that work better on iOS than Android?
I'm a mobile developer for the past 10 years and what you said is a load of nonsense.both platforms have prow and cons.

Google apps work better in iOS? LOL no
