- Is it possible to be too rich?

One thing i have never understood is why people carry on working when they have so much money in the bank, they must have shallow lives with nothing except work in their heads,i have plenty of hobbies to keep me busy till the day i die if i was rich.

Really? I mean REALLLLLY?!

Do you really not understand that some people's work is their hobby. They ENJOY what they do. They don't do it for the money. They do it in the same way that you would do your hobbies. It just has the added benefit of making them billions...

You really do like judging people...

Some people enjoy their job and get satisfaction from it.

I've always thought if I managed to scrape up enough to retire early I'd like to work a few mornings a week in a garden centre watering the plants and so forth. A little bit of pocket money, but also to give my week some structure and make me feel as if I was at least doing something. I think I'd quite enjoy that in my later years.

what,we are all judged from the day we are born till the day we die,(work to live not live to work)

Some people are not solely motivated by money.....they do the jobs they do for other motivations and challenges....

This goes for low paid jobs, like the military, police, nursing etc as well as the high paid executives, sportsmen etc....

It certainly doesn't mean their lifes are shallow or that they do not enjoy other pastimes and have a healthy work-life balance. In many cases it is quite the opposite.

It seems to me that these super extravant purchases are often made by people who either got their money easily, or had family who made the money.

I doubt Bernie himself would waste the money on such champagne, he's too bust off elsewhere making a few million more.
Gates and chums channel their wealth into good causes.
There seem many cases of the richest people being very shrewd with money also.

If i had several million in the bank, I would live well, but not extravagantly, investing and spending the interest etc, rather than lotto lout spending the lot in wastage.

If I was rich enough to not have to work I still would because I love what I do. I would like to invest heavily in the company and build etc. I also love the impact that my job has on peoples lives. I would be bored not working.

Too much money sounds like trouble to me. Would you really like your life to change that much? I imagine big lottery winners probably need to think about personal security and a bunch of concerns that come with having a lot of money.

I always thought a book on Lottery Winners would be a great subject to read.

No matter whether you earn £10k, £100k, £1,000,000 or higher you cut your cloth to suit, and will adjust your expenditure accordingly.
A £5k car becomes a £50k car becomes a £250k car.
A £100 watch becomes a £1000 watch becomes a £10k watch.
A £200k property becomes a £1m property becomes a £5m property....
It's all relative to your available spend...

Buying an Island would be nice...

If I was feeling particularly generous, I might save the British Economy....

The British economy needs more than the few billion £s to keep it ticking over :p

If i were to suddenly have billions of £'s in my account, it would scare me, as someone who has never even come close to dealing with massive amounts of money, It would be difficult to deal with :p

A million or ten would be nice, just be able to go about normal life with one less thing to worry about, but Billions are too much (unless you earned them, like in the case of the Ecclestones)

I would fund a the future and get people creating and sharing as many ideas as possible. Science, engineering and the arts. I would love to have this much money and see how I can set up my own completely awesome umbrella of companies. From big to small I would love to be able to change the world for the better, and if I do ever have such large sums of money, I think I could do well with it :)

Tell you what; start by giving me a million pounds a day and I'll tell you if I ever get 'too rich' ;)

Hell, often the Richest in the world, are the most sensible with money.... Look at Buffet.

^^^ this

One of the richest guy's on the planet and he still lives in a relatively modest house that your average doctor, lawyer, accountant etc.. could afford.

He's pledged to give nearly all of it away... ditto to Bill Gates (though I think he lives in a less modest house) he's also giving away most of his wealth to causes he believes in, scientific research etc...

So no I don't think having too much money is an issue in itself, its what you choose to do with the money that counts.

Because somebody has to. Maybe not for a bottle of wine but for other things. As I said above, if no one is stupidly rich enough to buy the stupidly expensive research products then the research can't be gradually cheapened and made available to the masses. It doesn't quite work for Champagne, but does with most products...

Bill Gates has so much money, that if you said he worked 24 hours a day for all his money (not that he does, but theoretically), in the time he'd take to bend down and pick up a $10 note, he'd have actually earned more by working...

its all relative

shes spending 87k on a bottle of champagne and yes thats rich compared to us

but then we are rich spending 3 quid on a pint of beer in comparison with those in the 3rd world who are struggling just for water

anyway if the rich stopped spending wouldnt the whole economy go wrong ? all the moneys in the world just sitting in offshore bank accounts . people 'wasting' money keeps the world going round
