Is it time for Quad Core?

People with Quad's are getting 45+ fps?

Because 45fps is "soo" good.

We're going to need to use dual cpu i7 systems soon just to max out GTA :(

GTA4 may well take advantage of a quad because its a port from consoles with multiple core processors. This is in direct contrast to the previous generation of consoles that were all single core efforts.

Theres really no reason not to have a quad core imo. Intels future roadmap are for quads now as is AMD. Dual were just the first stepping stone and quad will become the bread and butter of PC's.

Some peeps don't get the fact GTA must be badly ported, FGS don't upgrade your rig due to 1 POS game.

The fact is from a console with multi cores means nothing, both the Tri CPU and Cell CPU sound good but are nowhere near as good as current Desktop PC CPU's.

And to answer post #36, comparing Intel to AMD is not exactly apple to apples due to architecture and Phenom were not too great TBH but again any AMD64 beat them for Memory Bandwidth, even Nvidia can do that with their Chipsets over Intels. ;)

By the time a Quad is really needed it will be all Native Quads and not this early batch of crappy hot running/crap clocking I7's we have seen so far (that's what happens when you buy new released tech too soon).

I just bought a Q6600 on the MM, will do a gaming and benchmark comparison against my E2180 at the same speed and see what differences there are. If insignificant i might just sell it on and should make my money back given the price of them just keeps increasing :D

If I leave it a while I need to buy another E4300 which strikes me as a missed opportunity? I'm being told in the GTA thread that my system is crap :p

You can get a brand new retail E4300 on the bay for £39.99. There have been some bargains going on there recently. E6300's for less than £20. E2160's for £15 (i got one of these :D). E6600's have increased in price though. It used to be £50-60, now it's £70-80.

Fox - if you still have a copy of XP, try that instead, one thing I've noticed in the benchmark thread is that systems with XP are noticeably faster than ones with Vista when the spec is similar or the same...
Yes the listed minimum spec is actually a dual core CPU. I think GTA IV is the first game to require that.

Probably due to all the physics, nice to see cores being made use of.

Please do this. Can you do a test/comparison with the E2180 at its 2.00Ghz stock speed aswell?

45fps is pretty good actually. At what res though?

I get something like 25fps (probably less) in Crysis 1, so GTA4 would be fine for me.

I had a 2180 @ 3Gig and a Q6600 @ 3Gig. With my 8800GT the 2180 scored in the 11k range while the Q6600 scored in the 13k range so there is a noticable difference in performance. All the other components remained the same.

Put it this way, I'm a gamer, browse web, office use etc.

I got rid of a Q9650 before I had even used it! bought an "E0" E8400 for £110 before they went stupidly priced.

I'd bet my money all E8400's will clock to 4ghz+, so in terms of future proofing the higher mhz of the CPU will be better for future graphics card upgrades i.e. no bottlenecking for longer, also uses less energy i.e. electricity.

Why would a overclocked dual core use less electricity than a quad?

Overclocking dramatically increases the power consumption of a processor, and if the game or app didn't support the 3rd and 4th core of the Quad processor anyhow they would be using next to no energy as they would be idle.

The q6600's run hot ? mine is at 3.3 gig and idles now are 35-39 i would hardly say that's hot, a q6600 has 4 cores a E8400 has 2 what a daft comparison stick 2 E8400's together and you using the same sort of power lol, always makes me laugh the " it uses more juice " of course they will it has 2 more cores, people moan about the watts difference of these cpu's then sit with power hungry graphics cards in there machine :) .
