Is it time to get a Macbook?

Guys , i have a powerbook G4 with Tiger on it is it worth getting Lepord?

Also my DVD writer has gone in my G4 can anyone linky to a new internal DVD writer?

It's about £100 more to get the 2.2ghz and DVD burner?

Suppose it's worth it, I must have the ability to burn :)

2gb RAM upgrade it cheap from OcUK too I see :D

Have seen a nice Brenthaven (Edge|Black) case that fits the bill

Hmm, I've got a 15" Powerbook G4 1.33GHz but my ex dropped it and smashed the screen so now it's in the hands of my insurance company (I hope they decide to replace it rather than repair it).

Are there any rumours of new specs coming for the MacBooks and MacBook Pro's?

I am not a gamer so moving from a PC to macbook was relatively painless (I bought a Dell laptop for the g/f in case of emergencies). I have Parallels and VM Fusion to run my tax and accounting software (and some other PC stuff).

I upgraded the RAM to 2GB and the hard drive to 160GB - might go for a 200GB (7200 rpm) one in a few months time.

I am running Tiger at the moment, but Leopard is only about £75 so might go for that too.

It's also reassuring to have a clone of my total system on a bootable external firewire drive.

I bought my macbook a month ago - and havent looked back since! I still 'have' to use windows for work and sometimes working from home - but i really do find mac os so simple to use. There are lots of little quirks that may confuse you at first - but you'll soon pick up - make sure you check mac101 and switch 101 on the apple site!

I was in a similar situation to EVH, coming from a monster cad/arc workstation machine, I decided to make the switch (or parallel at least!) to mac when work bought me a new laptop.

Its fun - and theres loadsa people on here, Justin, EVH, Dr Jones to name but a few who really know their stuff! Half the time I dont have to post a question - 'cos somebody has already asked it and they've answered it!

Once you go mac you never go back! :)

//edit - definitely up the ram though - I bought the 4gb kit from OCUK and my macbook is now lightning fast!

@gazfocus - theres a thread on here somewhere about an 'ultra portable macbook' - that all the rumour sites are saying is coming at MWSF - but until anything is confirmed by apple, its still just speculation!

Although at the moment, the talk is of flash based memory and no or an optional optical drive - either way, I'm chuffed with my macbook - so whatever happens at Macworld, I'm happy!

Keep your eye out though!

4gb may be an overkill for me though as I'll only be doing light picture editing and movie converting and such, however if I make a good whack on splitting and selling my old system I may treat myself to the 4gb package while I have the cash :)

I have 2gb and it is perfectly adequate for what i use it for (similar stuff to you). I think 4gb is a bit overkill but it can be had for around £70 at the mo so a lot of people just go for it anyway.

I'm dieing to get rid of my rig now and move to the Mac Book ..........

Just need to make sure I get the best price for my stuff so I can be sure to get the 2.2ghz and 120gb hard drive and also the Double-layer SuperDrive :D

Whats a good mouse to use on these bad boys? I have a Logitech MX Revolution at the moment?

I totally agree! I only went for the 4gb as it was ridiculously cheap! I think the 2gb is adequate for most things! and at £30ish you cant go wrong!

Anyone care to comment about a mouse for the MB?

Are the mighty mouse any good? They look the part to me but I have never actualy used one?

I'm on my second wireless mighty mouse and it works perfectly, in fact more than perfect - but a lot of people seem to have trouble with them. The first one went back due to no clicking issues!

To be honest, I've read more bad reviews than good - but I liked the look of it and my compulsion to have a white looking desk overcame me!

Tis upto you - i suggest you try one in the apple shop if you can...

I love my mighty mouse, have to admit the scrolling is crap, but because it is white and goes with my Mac I'll be keeping it. Everything has to fit together for me :o

Damn you two............... :D

I will borrow the shop unit from my local shop if I can when I get my MB and then see how it fairs, I to would like to see the same colour on my desk, I hate clutter so the MB and a mighty mouse and perhaps a nice desk lamp will do me :)

Heh - I cant speak for Justin, but I certainly aim to annoy! The scrolling, as mentioned can be a bit tricky - but other than that I can't fault it! OCUK do a cracking range of mice if you dont want to spend that much on a mighty mouse..

Ikea

that's very mac looking... :P
