Is it worth switching from Hotmalil to Gmail?

Definitely. I switched ages ago & set my Hotmail account to forward to my gmail account which is the account I use for my Desire, Everything comes through to my handset now.

Well I've had a Hotmail account since it's earliest days. I hardly get any junk mail and when I do I never see it as it's sorted away automatically. I also get along with the interface fine - I can't see any problem with it.

That using a Hotmail address might lose me a job? I'd rather not work anywhere that bases employment value upon such a superficial aspect, anyway thanks.

PS: I do also have a gmail account, too :D

If you plan to get an Android mobile in the future then I'd highly recommend gmail because the two are so well integrated. For example you can manage your contacts on either gmail or the phone and the two will synchronise automatically. Or if you get a new Android phone you simply logon to it and it downloads all your contacts etc.

I've had both for years and it's only the past year that I've fully moved to gmail. It's a pain to move email address' but once done it's awesome.

Create GMail account
Use GMail to manage Hotmail account

No need to change existing contact details
No need to go back to the horrible Hotmail interface
Use all the benefits of GMail

Great success.

This. You can use gmail to retrieve and read your hotmail emails.

Yeah, I've had Gmail as my main mail for about 3 years now. No turning back.

Quick question though - is Gmail still regarded as an untrusted domain? I've had one buddy from about a year ago whose filter blocked emails from me automatically and said the reason was due to untrusted domain. He had to override the filter so that he could receive my emails.

I've used Google Apps (Google on your own domain) for years now. I couldn't use anything else ever again, it's fantastic.

Depends what the username is though IMO. We have loads of contractors working for us, and [email protected] etc is just fine.

Just occasionally we'll get someone start for us with an email like [email protected] or [email protected], these people get mocked mercilessly and usually don't end up working for us long.

On a more serious note, it doesn't look very professional if a contractor sends in emails from a retarded sounding address and they get forwarded/replied to customers/clients, it makes the company look jokey and amateurish.

I completely agree with you on that one. My address is [email protected] as i joined hotmail in 1995 (ish, can't be too sure) and my surname is extremely unique so it wasn't any problems getting a decent looking address. But what Rich_L was trying to say that he is prejudice against people that have a @hotmail.com account when looking through CV's which in my opinion makes him look like an ass. I'd rather not work with such a small minded individual TBH

The thing is i actually have a gmail account and that's only because i got an Andriod phone now, and i barely use it

I've had a Hotmail account since I was about 13, gets to much spam now so barely use it.

I signed up to googlemail last year when I got my HTC Desire, and I love Gmail!
However, yesterday someone in China tried to access my account. Gmail warned me and I changed my password. So hopefully all is well!

I have just recently ditched hotmail for gmail. So glad I made the move as hotmail was starting to royally **** me off! It would keep glitching and not load up email etc, the amount of spam started going up. I also bought an android phone, so now my gmail/google calendar accounts are nicely integrated. I also have a personal domain, so my actual email address didn't change, just where it was redirected to.

OH Come on !

Are you guys serious ? This is 2011 not flippin 2001. People should not be discriminated just because of their email address. Just because I have some awesome domains registered from 1996-1997 shouldn't impress the reader of my CV, it means nothing. Moreover I would probably be thinking the candidate is an old timer 'HAS BEEN' - so bin it.

A lot of talented hires use hotmail and I've never queried why nor have I queried as to why they don't know how to use pop3 or imap.... They were hired because they were ******* good at their jobs

EDIT : I usually have [email protected] on my CV I think I'll change it to a hotmail account and see if that makes any difference :D

If I got a CV with a hotmail.co.uk email address I would secretly be thinking "noob".

If I got a CV with a hotmail.com email address I would secretly be thinking "oldskooler - remember the good ol' MSN Messenger days? Respect".

If I got a CV with a googlemail.com email address I would secretly be thinking "you can change to gmail.com now if you live in the UK - don't you follow the gmail blog? Noob".

If I got a CV with a gmail.com email address I would be thinking "you're my kinda guy".

If I got a CV with a personal domain email address I would be thinking "Pro, dude. Pro".

GOOD THING I'M NOT A MANAGER AND JUST SOME NERD REALLY, RIGHT?
