Can you cite any official sources saying Google keep a record of all yoru browsing habits even after you opt out?

Both Chrome and Firefox have the opt out feature and Google are part of this movement.

Google's own privacy statement says they won't delete from anything they don't want to (in not so many words).

And there's been plenty of criticism of them over the years:

What went on years ago isn't what's going on now though. Also the whole wireless data collection thing was a massive huff in its own right.

I used 123-reg as they were cheapest. If you have no intention of hosting content and only having a domain name then sign up, something like £2 for 2 years for a .co.uk (from memory).

You'll need a web host too if you want space to upload a website etc.

There are hundreds of domain reg companies s out there though.

Clearing the data for you is not what I am referring to. Google keep all data about browsing habits whether you opt out or not. The only thing "clearing" it does, it stop it showing up on your page so your spouse/family/house mates can't see what you've looked at. Google never delete data. :)

The reason people get a bit frustrated (me included) is because I think it's daft to restrict yourself to inferior services simply because one is "afraid" of what data is being collected by the provider.

Anyway, you could just sign out when you leave Gmail when you want to browse.

www.google.com/history - just turn it off from the start. Bingo. I leave mine on... why wouldn't I want a company to know my browsing habits? All they will find out is that I'm a nerd*.

I use Google, I like Google. I have multiple Gmail, Google Apps, Google Docs, Google Wave etc. accounts. I made a simple, flippant comment about how your ass would belong to them. :)

Still doesn't mean they won't harvest your data - and the principle is the same as with anything. Just because I'm not doing anything wrong, doesn't mean I like others to know what I am doing.

If the govt. wanted to put a CCTV camera in every room in every house, "just in case" - would you be happy to let them, even if you trust they won't do anything with it?
 
... they still keep the data, they just don't show it to you/anyone using your account.

Did you conveniently forget that point? :p
 
As ashamed as i am because of it, i've never been able to move from my hotmail address. The interface 'works', i can't really fault it (but then it's kind of what i learned email with) but yes, the spam filter is horrible (even when i've told it the address is rubbish it keeps sending them to my inbox). But the prospect of running back through pretty much every account i've made and trying to change them all is just scary. That and the fact that i would have to do it all again if/when i get back into web design and get a proper domain, and a proper client.
 
"still" believe it? Nothing has been posted that is the contrary to the links I posted, so what should have changed my mind in the meantime? :confused:

Dude, privacy is the reason why I've hosted my own SMTP servers since 1998 but recently pushed everything in to google....

Why ?

Even as an ISP hosting your own servers - your ass will still belong to someone.

Why? Unless of course you're one of , clowns that still writes M$? I still use it because I've never had an issue with it. The spam filter is superb (never get any spam in my inbox) and it doesn't take a whole to load up like my Gmail account...

There is nothing particularly wrong with either mail provider.
 
Haha I love this thread! So much love for Google without realising that all of the plus points of Gmail are available with hotmail too. From forwarding to and from to hosting a live account on your own domain (intact my current uni do this which means my .ac.uk account will be available for a very long time after I graduate... ;)) to all the other things mentioned...

Tbh if you use android then maybe Gmail is better for you, if youbuse windows phone then live is better for you... Anyway who uses hotmail.com/.co.uk anyway? @msn.com is where it's at! Shorter to type than Gmail.com :p
