There was an issue not long ago but affected accounts got restored...
Also Gmail allows you to backup all your data locally as well as there being freeware apps to backup new emails to your PC in to standard mail format so any mail client can view them. Attachments etc included and all labels.
I had to check the date of the OP to make sure this wasn't posted back in 2005. Gmail was better than hotmail straight out of the box and has only gotten better. The issue with the advertisements using keywords from your emails is ridiculous scare-mongering. Who cares if an automatic script on a server decides what advertisements to show based on what's in my email? I've learnt to ignore google ads without even thinking about it now. In fact I'd have a hard time telling you where on the gmail screen the ads are located.
