Is money for a GPU such a bad birthday/Christmas list?

I'm the same, christmas and birthdays I'll say what I want to buy so cash instead of tat would be preferred. Personally, I'd rather bin the whole exchanging of gifts entirely and just say why don't we all just buy something for ourselves.

Couple of years back I wanted to get a 4k monitor so got cash from most people, bought a 4k monitor with it. Fathers day the other year, bought an iFixit kit and said that was my gift from the kids to me.

People keep asking what I'd like for birthday/Christmas this year and every time I say "money for a graphics card" so I can finally replace my 970. People say I'm difficult to buy gifts for when they know exactly what to send my way!

My parents keep asking what I want despite telling them  they say "you can't have nothing to open" when I don't want anything to open... I want a new GPU to enjoy gaming again

Is a gift of money really so bad...?

No, because a gift of money is a gift of choice and that's possibly the best gift.

We have nicer food and booze than gifts.

See customers on 22/24 Dec buying Aunt Bessie’s Yorkshire puds and roast potatoes. AB stuff should not grace the Christmas Day dinner. It’s the best meal of the year.

Some of my friends do a secret Santa with adults relatives. They buy something for their partner then buy one gift for whoever they draw. Their spend is £20 and have rules of no toiletries and no chocolates (unless they are actually quality)

My heart sinks when entering shops full of pointless gift sets. They are gifts given with little thought. Some of the gift sets are MORE expensive than buying the stuff individually. Take Lynx. Cans are £2.50 and shower gel £2. Put them in a box -£6. Paying £1.50 for cardboard.

Then have loads left in the sales. Head offices need to change things if the same gift sets come up each year. Boots this is you!

What resolution are you gaming at and what are your most demanding games? As £400-500 may be overkill for your needs. It may make sense to get something from the Members Market. Vega and the 5700 are ageing like fine wine and would be a big upgrade for you. 6700 XT more so. Upgrading at the £150-£300 price point means you can do the same in 2-3 years if need be.
I've been on 1080p for years partly due to only having 1080 monitors. I recently got a 4k monitor through work so I can finally go up a bit. Now I'm not planning on 4k gaming for years but I'd like to be able to do at least 1440p at 60+ FPS for a good while. My 970 has been with me about 4 years.

Members market is where I'm planning to planning to get something - I don't have the post count (yet!) But my friend can buy on there for me. Wanted to see what prices are like on there at the moment but he's been very busy so I've just been watching eBay for now.

I'd rather keep the card relevant for as long as possible, but with the way things have gone that doesn't seem a feasible as it once was.

If I was yourself I'd move to a 1440p ultrawide with either a VA or IPS screen. I found it was a huge upgrade from 1080p and much better than 4k because of the far better immersion. You can get budget high quality screens like this for between £250-£350. And they are such an absolute wonderful experience. While being more managable in terms of GPU use. You can also easily power them with a Vega, 1080, 5700 for relatively low GPU investment. If you're unsure at least goto a store with ultrawide gaming to see how good it is.

A packet of peanuts and a tangerine in one of my dad's welly boot socks. ;)

But nowadays if someone is kind enough to ask, a bottle of Laphroaig or ill buy one myself.

No not at all its what you want and they probably aren't going to shell out for the whole cost of a gpu you want so part payment is fine. My mothers the same I don't need it but it makes her better she's giving something and I honestly don't need anything at least nothing she can afford.

I think I've gotten these for many many years now. They are the laziest present you could give to someone. They are practical and I use them so as not to waste it but there's no thought and means about as much as not giving anything.

Yet I feel I can't say anything to the giver and appear ungrateful.

Same goes for the tubs of inferior chocolates such as ‘Quality’ Street. Surprised that no one has asked them to change the name due to trade descriptions….

Then gift cards or vouchers. Remember receiving a H&M gift voucher aged 13. The nearest one at the time, was Milton Keynes. Leicester had a H&M opened 2.5 years later. We went to MK on a detour to visit some family.

As my birthday is January. I got about £80 worth of vouchers at Christmas and birthday. My mum used to buy books from Red House Books on mail order as cheap. It took all year to use all the vouchers.

Don’t mind gift cards if there’s shops/places nearby, or websites I buy from.

This is so true. So many times I've had gift vouchers for places I don't shop at.

Rather get what you want than a load of tat which will just end up in landfill anyway.

In my younger days whilst I was ruining the planet for Greta and her friends I used to overload friends with absolute junk as gifts, now that I'm older, lazier and poorer, the green excuse is fantastic.
