Is my Internet fast enough for online games?

I don't really play online games very much, mainly because the few I've tried on PS3 don't work very well, and because I generally get bored of games before I get good at them. But seeing as I've recently got a PC, I'm tempted to try out BF3 etc. Problem is my internet isn't exactly amazing, but is it fast enough to play without glitches?

Download speed seems to vary randomly between 4-7Mbps, upload and ping are pretty stable.

It might lag a bit if somebody starts downloading something, but if it's just you using the internet then it should be fine. Your ping isn't great, but I wouldn't have thought that'd be too much of an issue in something like BF3.

I've played many online games with no problem on this:

My ping is usually a bit better than that.

With the speeds above, if anyone else decides to start browsing or doing anything I may as well log out.

I used to play on a 64k link back when they'd charge less for it. Because it doesnt matter, dsl lowers your latency or ping and thats all that matters.

If the game has to download something then sure 'speed' matters but its all about the quality and until fibre optic comes in you wont improve this drastically

Instead of doing that test, check how far away your local telephone exchange is from your house. If its less 2 miles you should get an ok connection most of the time

Then I would expect a better speed than that. Check your setup, make sure router is in the master socket and the filter is in first. Check other sockets in use and make sure they're filtered too.

Cables loop all over the place so distance from exchange means very little as the underground wires are a complete mess. I used to game on 512k and never had any issues, but this was a few years back.

The modems filtered and the cables are fine afaik. However we do have a separate modem and router, and the modem is pretty old, so not sure if this would be affecting the ping? Is there a way to prioritise my computers ping over the others? I know this sounds selfish but no one else uses the internet for anything except normal browsing and streaming the odd tv show off iPlayer, so shouldn't affect them.

Doesn't really matter so much about the speed as it does of the quality of the service.

Talktalk aren't that great of an ISP if I remember right. Faster speeds with horrible pings make for bad gaming.

Changing your modem or priority of computers connected to your modem probably won't fix the problem (unless it is a certain computer slowing down your net by downloading/uploading a lot).

However if your upload/ping is stable then online gaming will be okay. I've played UT on 56k which is a pretty fast paced game (super fast compared to todays games) and never had problems of lag then.

Okay thanks for the help, looks like i'll be buying BF3 on wednesday :D. Don't want to get it now as then i'll be too ill for college ;).

I really can't believe in this day and age we still have these shocking speeds, its the upload that gets me really mad.

Is it right we have the slowest connections in Europe? or even the world?! BT's infinity project seems to be going nowhere fast too.

You're on talk talk BT Infinity has no impact, generally speaking upload speeds are capped very few retail customers 'need' to be able to upload at anything over 1mb

think the slow uploads are to stop people from running file servers and torrent banks :)

to answer OP your DL speed is plenty enough for gaming, your ping is questionable but still easily 'good enough' still (do more tests with other locations), your upload speed only matter if you run a game server (no more the 6 players with that speed)

You can't really judge ISP's all depends where you live, We are on TalkTalk and have 18mb download and 700k upload, Ping is 30ms in WoW and no lag or downtime at all in other gaming

We have the worst internet in the world I think. I still only have 3meg but hey I live right out in the sticks, we don't even have street lights :p
