Is my Internet fast enough for online games?

Speedtest.net says i have a 15ms ping

How good or bad is that ??

15ms is decent if it is to London and not some dodgy host in the Channel Islands.

Basically to answer the OP the answer is "Yes", although 44ms is a bit high if that's a typical ping.

Essentially, when playing on dedicated servers (i.e. not P2P) even a 512kbit down / 256kbit up line is generally fine providing you have stable low ping and no packetloss. Online games use very little bandwidth, typically in the 5-25k/sec range depending on the game and how much action there is.

Psh, I started online FPS games on a 28.8kbps modem with an average of 400 ping. Took me years to get rid of the automatic ping lead when shooting at running players after moving to broadband.

A sub 100ms in-game ping in most games (unless you're doing competitive play) will be perfectly fine tbh.
Jitter affects online game play more than anything else.

It's better than mine when I'm out in the sticks....

That's on Sky's LLU "up to 20Mb"

I find I have playable latency when online gaming. A stable line is more important than a fast one.

I've -273 ping, which means my bullets hit you before I even fire

...Usually 30-40, but I don't play online so much.

I love my work connection:

Sadly my home connection looks more like this:

I really do hate VM :/ That's a 100mbit connection (I realise that download speeds != ping speeds) but it has been pretty unusable since December due to utilisation issues in the area.

VM have always been like that, big on the speeds but ignore the quality as no one really knows enough about it to complain about it.

Even if the connection is good I haven't seen a VM line have the best ping vs other ISPs.

Agreed completely. Unfortunately where I live is very far from the exchange and BT Infinity was only just becoming available when I moved there. Previously I've been on Be pretty much constantly and before that was available, UKOnline (before Easynet were bought out by Sky).

You think some of the speeds are bad here? I've been on DSL for pretty much a decade now and almost always been the same speed...512kbps! It now varies between .5mb-1mb connection.

However the saving grace is I've always <50ping in every game I've played and it's nice and steady too. Just lucky I'm not one for downloading much and if needed then I'll just pop down my mates house who has 50mb BT Infinity line which is like 5minutes drive away, doh lol!

I game happily on a similar connection, 5.67 mbps with 0.37 mbps upload...its fine.

Regularly enjoy a low ping, even when I'm downloading something in the background.

It does slow down a bit when our xbox is being used with the wireless.
