Is my Internet fast enough for online games?

I went from about 1mb with 30-40ms ping to this...

Can't say I noticed any difference in online games, huge difference for everything else though. :D

I used to play Quake deathmatch over 28.8k. You ungrateful young whippersnapper.

You think some of the speeds are bad here? I've been on DSL for pretty much a decade now and almost always been the same speed...512kbps! It now varies between .5mb-1mb connection.

However the saving grace is I've always <50ping in every game I've played and it's nice and steady too. Just lucky I'm not one for downloading much and if needed then I'll just pop down my mates house who has 50mb BT Infinity line which is like 5minutes drive away, doh lol!

If your mate lives 5 minutes away with a connection like that, surely you can access much better than 512k?

To the OP ,make sure you get on the talktalk support forum and ask them to switch you from interleaved to a fastpath profile , it will drop your speed slightly but will drop your ping quite a lot which is far more immportant for gaming .

Fastpath increases the speed, however can make the line unstable too.

Unless Talktalk fastpath is different to Be*.

It's a 5 min drive away so a good few miles away, completely different exchange. I've tried before to get something better but even on bt wholesale they say I'm still limited to 512kbps :(

BT option 3 here, not that impressed with it at all tbh.

No sign of infinity yet, its available in a few places round my way. But no plans for where i live.

Used to play everquest on a 28.8 kbps modem/dial up for several years, ping was <100ms (US based servers) and 72man raiding was still perfectly fine. Was a bit pricey on the phone bill though

So whilst I consider this speed shocking for London (zone 5).

(As the crow flies the exchange is close, shame about the park and cementry which combined means it triples the distance).

Anything over even 1mb broadband is more than enough for online gaming.
