is nobody bothered anymore? (trades people / companies)

For some reason, working in IT is seen as a hobby for family members! I've heard this so many times from colleagues but if you ask them for help, you get a bill at the end, maybe mates rates if you're lucky. They ask you to help them with an IT issue, that might take longer to fix than it did them! And they look at you gone out if you mention being paid for your time!!

Yep but didn't you know it takes years to learn the skills of a trade, but IT can be taught in a one week course from one of those yellow idiot books. So it's really an unskilled job and deserves unskilled rates.

So a plumber can happily charge you £100 per hour for their "skills", but tell them it will be anywhere close to that to fix their broken accounts PC and you get the "you're having a giraffe" response.

Why would you even consider paying someone £2000 to move a paint brush up and down? No wonder these people are laughing their way to the bank!
Its not that easy to do lol. but it is doable for sure.

Sanding floors however is hard work and i managed!

I also basicaly rewired my network cables throughout my house!

Why's that?

A multitude of reasons

You can go in doing a simple job for example let's say Replace a socket or add a socket but then have to repair a number of bodge diy jobs like an open ring circuit or there's a poor or no earth and have to argue over price

If you have to lift up floorboards you then have to move furniture I went to a fair few places where you wouldn't keep pigs in I'm sorry but some people are disgusting if your disabled and struggle then fair doos

People expect you start a job after they've finished work you finish at half 5 in the evening so do I or expected to do the job over the weekend and expected to no not be charged extra

After a consumer unit change from old rewireable fuses when they plug in an appliance and it trips the rcbo because its faulty its never the appliances fault because it worked before I've heard that 1 to many times

And when going out to do a rewire you get asked your not going to make a mess are you I've just decorated

I'll stick to industrial and commercial

Because it's messy and I can't paint a straight line to save my life...... although last time I did an ok job but this time I want it doing nice.....plus with the amount of masking tape I go through it might work out cheaper lol

Fair enough. £2000 buys a lot of dust sheets in my world.

OK well my mate did a complete rewire.

House was not livable so he had free reigns.

The only issue was dealing with the roofer and builder as I was doing other stuff in the yard.

It all went well so I won't be having no issues with lack of earth or any DIY bodged jobs.

But don't forget, the reason why we do DIY, including some here is because you guys the pros are too expensive lol.

The fact is what homeowner wouldn't love to get a proper no cowboy trader in for a job?

Home owners don't go about looking for cowboys!

Its just that many get scammed and as a result, just say **** it I'll do it myself then.

There needs to be more legality in protecting the customers from cowboys

No but they do go looking for the cheapest. And so many want things done for practically nothing.

EDIT: Having said that, I do find tradesmen so expensive that I don't even bother asking for a quotes for work so I never get anything done! Luckily my house is in good condition and I can deal with the small things

When an electrician can literally pick from 100s of jobs why do a crappy house rewire and have to deal with idiot homeowners and cramped often horribly designed ancient crappy British houses... It makes perfect sense tbh.

Then who is supposed to do it then if every electrician says no?

You want people to continue to live and use 1930 wiring? Lol

Who doesn't look for the cheapest? Don't you?

Don't you shop around trying to find a bargain or two?

Everyone does it lol.

Its human nature but the fact is even the expensive traders can be cowboys so the saying of u get what you pay for doesn't apply to traders lol

Yeah to be fair I had an old boy say he was going to quadruple the quote simply because his back had gone and squeezing under the stairs to do my CU was not at all on his list of desirable jobs lol.

Young lad did it for £700 in the end but I felt for him. Not comfy at all

That's his point. Rewiring is an awful job for electricians, especially in old houses with solid walls.

It's hard enough to get a hold of one for an easier job so good luck asking for a full rewire on a 1900's gaff.

This is a major problem in London that a lot of sparkies simply refuse to go in there or charge stupid amounts for the trouble. It will get even worse when the Ulez increases.

The thing is those IT jobs will be replaced by AI in the not too distant future or subbed out to somewhere in India. A plumber will not be replaced by AI in our lifetime and therefore can charge what he likes. Sorry to break it to you but a tradesman is generally in a lot higher demand than your general IT bod. Even if you spent years studying.
