Is Overclockng worth doing?

Considering that it is pretty cold at the moment I would not go any higher than that....

For example add another 10 degree ambient temp in the summer and that is 81 degrees...

No prob, you can run it at high temperatures but it will probably die eventually because it puts a lot of "thermal stress" on the CPU...

For example if the CPU is heating up to 80 degrees and then cooling down to 10 degrees when switched off all the time it will shorten the life of the CPU quite a lot.

Personally I would not want to go any higher than you have there and also you don't actually need any more than 4.2Ghz really that will run everything well already.

Which cooler you using atm?

I'm only using Hyper 212 Evo and after 30 mins of Prime95 the max temp it reached was 61c which I thought was pretty ok after half an hour of 100% load, which I can't imagine I'm ever going to do in normal circumstances.

Wondering if I should push to around 4.5? Idk if it would be worth it.

If its under 65c in prime 95 after an hour then it is completely fine although don't forget that ambient temperature makes a big difference so in the summer it will be quite a bit hotter. Anyway CPU hardly ever gets stressed as much as prime95 so if it is stable in that then it will certainly be stable in everyday usage. See how high you can get without changing the volts.... If its 61 at the moment then that is no prob but if you add 10 degrees in the summer that is 71 which is a bit hot although I am not sure what the Tmax of the Ivy bridge CPU's is.

Will depend on the voltage you need for 4.5ghz. Mine needs 1.300 in bios, llc on high. Temps range from 64c on the lowest core to 74c on the highest at 100% load. Cooler is an alpenfohn k2 with dual akasa piranha fans. Temps in game only hit over 60c max.

Maybe the corsair H100 or similar then if you want an upgrade to that....

Don't really know a lot about watercooling though tbh...

How do you tell if you've passed a Prime95 test on blend?

Have my cpu at 4.5hz at the moment. Firstly with vcore at 1.15, but 2nd core got an error after about 15mins prime95. Whacked it up to 1.18 vcore and ran prime95 for 50 mins, but then core 2 got an error again.

Temps never went above 65c, but generally sat around 58-60.

I take it that's a fail as no errors are acceptable and I should put a bit more voltage in. Knock it up to 1.19 or 1.2? :)

You can run it not prime stable and it will probably never crash in daily usage because prime is maximum stress on CPU, ram etc. But it is obviously better to have it prime stable... You can either knock it down 50mhz or up the voltage... Personally I would just run it at 4.4Ghz because you don't actually need more than that anyway and it is winter atm so 65 is a bit high considering the ambient temps.... That will prob be more like 75 in the summer which is a bit high... You can do what you want but the actual real world difference between 4.4Ghz and 4.5Ghz is basically nothing except 4.5 looks nicer.

Cheers man,

I've been running at 4.5ghz and Prime95 blend for 1hr 30mins now with no errors, everything seems to be passing and temps are sitting around 55-60, peak at 66 but never go passed it.

If I make it to 2hrs with everything still being fine, can I call it a pass? Getting kinda bored not being able to play! lol

I ran p95 for just over an hour or so error free, (1.2800 vcore) but got a few freezes in bf3 and a few whea errors in event viewer. Upped the vcore voltage a few notches to 1.300 and the system has been rock solid for weeks now. Temps in game max at 62c, but then i have a gpu that dumps heat into what is a very poorly ventilated case.

My prime95 test is reaching 5hrs now, no errors, temps stable at about 58-62. Fairly sure this is quite stable, I'll do an overnight test at some point.

Is it a good chip if I can run 4.5ghz at 1.18? llc is on high though.

Yes 2 hours is good as long as you do not get any blue screen or freezes in windows / games then that is good.

LLC on high here as well, as advised by 8pack in a thread i made on here, 1.18 vcore is pretty good and nice low temps. I havent bothered with an extended p95 test on this rig. Done so with every other cpu ive owned and clocked, just using it for my normal tasks, (mainly games) and it's been grand. It did take me a while though to get my head round clocking ib as i was so used to i7 1366 setups for so long.
