is Physx a big factor?

PhysX itself is a decent bit of middleware software - capable of advanced physics that are useful to future gaming titles... the way nVidia has handled it tho is not very positive or useful.

I think Mafia II may be the make or break game - even tho it doesn't use it as fully as I'd like - if it does enhance the experience significantly I think other developers will take note - if its a wet blanket then consumers and developers will continue to mostly ignore it.

+1

The last NVidia card I bought was a geforce 3, that left such a bad taste with the dire image quality, and I mean absolutely dire blurey mess, that nothing nvidia has produced since has been enough to drag me back to them.

blurry mess? never noticed it with my GeForce 3 - think there was something wrong - the only time nVidia has been a blurry mess is attempting to render directx 9 shaders with the GeForce FX (5) series...

EDIT: Tho I have to admit the GeForce 3 didn't have as nice filtering quality in farcry as the cards that came after it - but your talking the next generation of cards.

Whether or not a card had Physx didn't even enter my mind when making a decision.

No not really it just a little extra only on Nv hardware...

most games use Havok or the like anyway

*cough red faction*

:p

Physx has been out for years and has not added anything to gameplay and little to graphics(no new effects since it was released), sure get it if you like waving flags or lots of rubbish flying around. Its very overrated. If you like nice graphics focus on getting a DX11 card and ignore Physx.

Nv do DX11 cards too you know

and you get phyX as well

also Nv cards are not over priced...this time comparing up with ATI

it can't so that's why there's the gpu_physics command

Yeah it's gpu_particle_physics command and it works on ATI as well as Nvidia cards and there is no indication that it runs better with an Nvidia card.
gpu_particle_physics [0,1] - If set to 1, appears to enable the processing of particle physics on the GPU (graphics card). Since the particle system is already threaded (see e_particles_thread), this setting will likely only improve performance on systems with single-core CPUs and fast graphics cards (system).

There is no game where phsx significantly improves it, or where the lack of physx prevents you from enjoying properly if you like the game.
There are some good reasons to choose between ATI & NVidia cards (or more accurately between specific models) and physx is not one of them.

The whole hardware physics thing needs just one great killer app, which only runs with it, a mario 64, if you will. I don't see that happening and I'm not sure if it's necessary.
The very best physics based games, where the physics are a core gameplay component, need no hardware acceleration at all. I mean a game like World of Goo which is great game where physics are actually a key part of the experience.

This is true, I would look at performance, price, power usage Ect and pay no attention to Physx when getting a new card, i just dont see its benefit in todays games.

this thread only highlights one thing- personal preference;)

When buying a gpu, some folk on here will be bothered about how much power it consumes or how much heat it outputs whereas myself for example, couldn't care less about those things- thats why I bought a beefy psu so those are non-issues for me.

The only reason I game on the pc is to get THE best gaming experience possible- higher fps and high res textures are what i expect whatever brand of gpu I buy but at the moment its is features like physx and 3d vision which make it worthwile spending £360 on a graphics card to play a game I could play a nerfed version of on the consoles.

So in my personal opinion, physx is worth it:)

Just had a good hour at Batman, and gotta say, Physx is cool in it, wafting smoke et al.

Turned on high physx, and getting up to 40+% usage on the old 8800GT so far.

Not a deal breaker, but very nice to have it, all the same.

Bring on Mafia 2!

I would still rather having it than not so I am considering getting that hacked driver in my new build which someone mentioned before.

Added content but some of it unrealistic.
The fog in BAA that parted in front of the guard as if he had a fan strapped to his front.

And they highlight to often " A few more Debris"
'Leaves added' lol
There's just a couple of very minor eye-candy added with PhysX, nothing interesting at all.
