Is Saudi Football a threat to the European leagues?

Yeah that's what stinks about it, absolute wrongun but both he and United are going to benefit financially from it.

I don't think Man Utd are benefiting financially. They are cutting their losses. I've seen suggestions that Greenwood was valued at around £100m before the scandal. They will get a fraction of that, if they get anything.

Maybe big names might go to Saudi, but I remember the old days of football when most players came in from the youth team, or feeder clubs from lower divisions. So from that point of view, even if all the big names went it would be a chance to get to grass roots, literally.

Other people's like our league for who we are. They try and replicate it. But other leagues will never be better than the original, in my opinion.

They're still going to make some money off him that wouldn't have been an option if he had to stand trial.

His value before all of this is irrelevant now.

Saying United will benefit financially is insane. We've lost a 100m asset that we've been training since he was 7, then we've paid him in full for the best part of 18 months with no use of him.

They benefit because with the Saudi clubs now in the mix, the money involved is more than what you could've got a few years ago in the same situation.

It's about the only place he can go and be accepted without taking a massive pay cut.

He's no longer a 100 million asset and you're lucky to get anything for him at all considering what he did.

Let's wait and see how much he actually goes for before making these claims. Unless the fee is very high we're absolutely not going to be profiting from the whole saga.

Any amount of money back for him is a win given his current situation and value. Even if it's a loan deal with them offering to pay 100% of his wages, that frees up 200k a week or whatever he's on.

75k

And yes of course we want to get rid of him, I think we'd be happy with mutually terminating his contract without a payoff personally but if a club is happy to pay for him then why shouldn't we take it?

Whether the club should or shouldn't take it isn't my decision. All I was saying was that, given the current situation in Saudi football, they could benefit financially as it may be the only option for him if he wants to continue playing without abuse and at a similar salary.

If anyone pays for Greenwood, United would almost certainly have to donate it to a charity somehow or they would start up another **** storm.

Could that not potentially be interpreted as the club deeming him guilty of something?

If they donate his fee to say a womens abuse charity that sort of goes against his statement of "I did not do the things I was accused of".

Edit: Looks like even the Saudi's want nothing to do with him.

The fact he is leaving the club is an admission that he has done something really bad. To profit from that would not look good.

I don't know the reality of what has actually happened. Releasing him seems in no way an admission he is guilty. However in 2023 burden of proof is no longer required in trial by social media. It strikes me that Man Utd just don't want the aggro of dealing with this.

Looks like Roberto Mancini is off to Saudi too but more surprising is the news that Gabri Veiga is heading to Saudi. Many of the big European teams have looked at him this summer, City, Utd, Liverpool, Bayern, Napoli etc and in the end he's picking to go to Saudi. If a young upcoming , much wanted, player like him is opting for Saudi (presumably for the cash) rather than a big European team, thats a different situation compared to the end of their career players.

Did any of those clubs actually want him or was it just agent/twitter chatter? Seems to me Al Ahli were the only club to come in and meet his release clause..

Napoli bid 26m for him I believe, how serious other teams were we may or may not ever know, but if I was a 21 year old upcoming player given the choice of playing in a European league or playing in the Saudi league, I know which one I would pick

Edit : Liverpool allegedly bid 21m earlier in the summer
