Is Saudi Football a threat to the European leagues?

I actually have just been watching the friendly between Al-Jazira and Al-Ettifaq, mostly to see Henderson. Got to say, he looked lost in the game, he was barking out instructions in the same manner as when he was at Liverpool but it was clear that most of the players had no idea what he was saying, a few times the camera zoomed in on his face and he had a look of "what exactly am I doing here?" on it, a rather bemused look. Very early of course but I dont think it will be long before he is looking at the players and crowd and stadium infrastructure around him and then watching a Liverpool Premier League match on the tv and thinking, I could have been in there still, fighting for major trophies. The money will dampen it a lot but I do think there will be pangs of regret in him quite quickly at just where/what he is now playing in

You get one life. Jordan Henderson has enough money to support his family for generations. One thing he will not have is another chance to play football at the highest level. No money in the world will change that.

I'm a sure most players would give up their fortune to be young and play again at the top.

Nah, he probably had another year at Liverpool and thats it. Only a madman would have turned down the salary he was being offered. You would be surprised how easy it is to squander millions. There are plenty of wealthy ex-sports people who have earned insane money and are broke a decade after they retire.

List of what Neymar will get moving to saudi...

Another little reminder of the type of people these millionaire footballers are deserting their morals for

No, us civilised countries just let them drown in the ocean as we turn a blind eye to it...

I think this is my problem with the west looking down on these "unenlightened" countries. They are just far less subtle about their horrible nature. We just prefer to dress it up while they don't even give it a second thought.

not turning this into an immigration thread, but all I’ll say is that to even begin to compare the two is utterly ridiculous and I’d expect better of you

I can't say I'm surprised that someone's already had to throw the towel in, but you do have to wonder what's caused it. Even if you were not enjoying it, I'd have thought most of the players would have been expecting it to potentially be a bad experience and commit to sticking it out for 12 months (even if just for financial reasons).

I'd imagine it would be an awful place to live, rich or not. I have quite a bit of time in Dubai when my brother worked there and that feels restrictive enough.

I'd imagine it more of a culture shock for a pro footballer than for a normal working person.

Footballers are known for living a certain type of lifestyle that is probably the same sort of lifestyle most guys in their 20s would live if earning the silly money they get. It isn't the sort of lifestyle that will go mix well with life in Saudi Arabia.

True, but from what I've heard a lot of them choose to live instead in Dubai and commute, which would be far more in-line with that cliché footballer lifestyle.

Greenwood linked with Al Ettifaq for 10m a year now. I guess a lot of his options are very limited at the moment but that would be sort of landing on his feet given the circumstances.
