Is that car uninsured on your drive?

Current law only punishes people for driving an uninsured vehicle, meaning that people can only be caught on the road. Around 2 million motorists are estimated to drive around uninsured (6.5% of all motorists in the UK), and these drivers are said to add approximately £30 per year to all of our insurance premiums.

So say 1000 people drive into a town in rush hour between 7.30 and 8.30 in the morning, 65 of these are uninsured....

Just put a police checkpoint in place and a digger, Italian job style.

Dont have insurance, your car gets flattened, sure that would get things done quickly enough.

Same dilema for me, have a project Beetle in the garage, dont even have the reg doc for it yet, basically just a shell with no engine in it, no way am I insuring that, still not in my name yet so might be fine.

This is going to make it interesting for me, i regularly have 3+ uninsured yet taxed cars on my land waiting for sale. I guess this just forces small traders to always sell without tax.

Which is annoying because I hate buying a second hand car if there's no tax on it. Even if there's only a week left I'll buy that car in preference since I can just drive it away and deal with it when I get home

Exactly why i never cash tax in, and often supply fresh tax before the time of sale. No way i can see that i would be able to continue to do this, though. Trade insurance polices are not linked to specific vehicles, so they will surely all flag as uninsured.

Good point Jez, I wonder what effect this will have on traders. Sure plenty of them have cars with tax still on them, but use a traders policy for test drives etc.

Do you not have traders insurance?

Trade insurance does not relate to specific vehicles, it covers the trader and designated staff to drive anything. Therefore i do not understand what is going to happen, as any taxed stock will flag as uninsured and surely produce an automated fine.

Exactly, far from all trade stock will be SORN.

The net result of this being more money for the Government, legitimate people getting fined the moment they slip up (as well as having to pay more) and absolutely sod all effect on those still driving around without an MOT, tax or insurance.

Nice one.

Makes sense to me.... automatic fines for uninsured cars.... Not like they can drive around with no tax/insurance and not get fined. At the minute they can get tax and avoid that automatic penalty.

Not going to stop someone giving a false name and address though surely.

If you are going to drive the car then take out a policy the week before to start the day you need it... then you can tax it the day you need it to start... Not really that much of a hastle, how often are people really going to be doing this?

Hey and when you come to buying a new car, another issue - if you buy the new car before getting rid of the old one and then swapped your current insurance over to it, your old car would then cause you to be subject to a fine unless declared SORN - that would mean cashing in the remaining tax.

You'd then be left with a car to sell that had no tax on it and that is SORN, making it harder to shift - Or you'd have to buy additional insurance to cover your now 2nd car until it sold.

Woooooo...

Easy to get round it, just SORN the car, don't insure it, don't MOT it and just drive it like normal.

If you don't submit anything you'll get away with it, if you forget to cross a T or dot an I then you get screwed over.

This is a stupid rule, i have my un-insured mx5 at my parents, it has 7 months tax left on it as there is no point trading it in for a £50 rebate and i planned to insure it for my dad when it gets a bit warmer but he will have to go to the trouble of taxing it also.

Good plan to introduce a SORN charge and make billions for the government to help with the crisis i gues...

This also affects drivers of some sprint and rally cars. The regs require the car to be taxed (proof of being road worthy as it also implies an MOT) yet the cars don't get driven on the road, being trailered to and from events. On some rallies the entry to the rally provides road insurance for all competitors if they have to travel between stages. It becomes another needless expense.
