Is the DSi completely pointless?

I am seriously thinking about getting a ds for my holiday and while on the plane.

I keep reading that the dsi sucks the the battery pretty hard compared to the ds lite as much as 5 hours more play time can be had with the ds lite which to me is very significant, strange why no one has mentioned that here? Have you not found it a problem?

The good points for the dsi seem to be updated os and wpa support.. I'm not sure it is worth the hit taken on battery life. Especially as the battery isn't replacable quickly without opening the dsi up, something you can't do on the move.

I was impartial to it, I wouldn't have bought one but didn't think it was that expensive for what it was. But last night I was chatting to my friend's sister and she has a DSi and told me that you can't play GBA games on it? I know you've got more screen, a camera and an SD slot... But let's be realistic here, that technology isn't going to be taken advantage of to it's fullest extent... You're paying more for a console that can do less. :s

IMO its the most pointless console update in years. Nintendo must be smoking some really great **** because they have no idea what people want at the moment.

Dont get me wrong, I have a dslite and I love it, but I just hate the route that nintendo are taking at the moment, its too gimmicky. And their ignorance concerning wireless encryption is so annoying, the least they should do is release some sort of firmware update and enable something better than WEP, no one who has a brain would use WEP in this day and age. But no, instead they put a camera in, removed the GBA slot and processor, and made an advert of some guy and his girlfriend having fun by taking shots of each other with the camera and playing about with effects.

Honestly they are clueless.

Yes, because everyone in their target markets (ie kids, casual gamers, non-geeks, and mums) are experts in wireless networking security.

The vast majority of people use WEP. The vast majority of Nintendo's current target market are more interested in mucking around with photos, Nintendogs etc than helping Link rescue Zelda again.

It's a shame, I agree; as a big fan of Nintendo's past games and consoles (had never owned anything else until this gen.) I'm gutted by the route that they've taken, but don't hold it against them; it makes fantastic business sense, and fair play to them. I just wish that something other than the possibility of playing a new Zelda game would give me reason to re-buy a Wii!

Is this still going on?

It has more processing power, more memory, SD option and an online store. It may have been a bit early but it's an awesome console. I'm definitely playing my handheld games a lot more since I got my DSi.

It's not worth the upgrade if you've got a DS but if you're looking for a new handheld I'd rather get the DSi.

I went for a DS Lite, for me the extra battery life out weighs the next to useless camera and tiny screen size increase.. for the extra money I just didn't think it was worth it at all to get a dsi.

grandbairn got one for her 6th birthday, she loves the picture taking and doodling about with them.

can't think why anyone would buy the older systems. i'll be replacing my daughters DS's come xmas with dsi's and the way it is selling, i'm sure it wont belong before wii have a fair few dsi games.

If I were to buy one I think it would have to be the DS Lite purely because I would like the option of playing GBA games also. Obviously the other technology is more important to a lot more people, but each to their own.

Just searched for DSi threads as my wife suggested getting our son one for his 8th birthday.

He currently has a Lite but the bottom screen is damaged (again), so rather than pay £60 for it to be fixed (or buy a new one) she suggested one of these.

My boy plays with his DS daily, I'm sure he'd love playing around with the camera etc - But I'm not convinced it's worth an extra £50/60. He also still plays his old GBA games (and has quite a few), and has Guitar Hero on tour (for Xmas). None of these will be of any use with the DSi.

Will they start producing new games exclusively to this console? If not I can't see anything warranty an extra 33% premium over the Lite?

They have said they will be producing exclusive DSi titles but so far no info has materialised, also additional DSi bonus content but same no info.

If he has guitar Hero & Old games I'd get the DS Lite, DSi is worth the extra imo but as he has use for the Old GBA slot then I'd go with the lite.
