Is the Mazda RX8 that bad?

bledd. like 90% garages wont even touch rotary engine. I got 3 mechanic mates in 3 different garages. One of them owns rx7 and when he had engine problems he went to rotary engine specialist himself even tho he does engine rebuilds....

I think they are defiantly worth it, but dont look at it as cheap weekend car as it will rape your wallet repeatedly.

My girlfriends dad has ran one for the past 2-3 years and it is a fantastic car. but it drinks fuel, goes through tyres at a rapid pace at roughly £100 a corner and it has suffered a number of issues.

It is common for the ignition coils to go on them they have 4 and they are about £40 each. If you start it up and move it a few feet then switch the engine off it will flood and cause you a headache. The engines will eventually die a horrible death but they can be maintained, the trouble is finding a good mazda mechanic which wont be cheap and being prepared to spend 4 figure sums on engine work over the cars lifetime.

No they really arnt actually that bad, they are well built, good quality interior, well balanced RWD 230bhp all for less then 2k

Taking the cons in to account:
Fragile engine
Need for regular oil
Omg crisis Mpg (15-18)

For the price, I would have one as a weekend toy, if I had a budget for a weekend toy :)

Err what's the tax on a Pre 06? If its £270 still, then defo still good ;)

I really like them, it's just a shame about the timebomb under the bonnet. Everything else about the car is really good. If I had the space to do an engine swap project the host would definitely be an RX8.

Buy one in the knowledge that you will get very poor MPG for the performance, they don't feel as fast as they perhaps should, and the engine will need thoroughly checking over prior to purchase, and you won't be disappointed.

Here we go again with the RX8 thing :p

They are cheap for a reason, shocking fuel economy for comparatively lukewarm performance and the engines are inherently flawed!

It's not just a matter of 'if' the engine will fail, it's 'when'. The rotor tips are usually just about worn out by the time you hit 60k miles, then you get a loss of power, death rattle, marbles in a blender and then total failure.

Shame as they look and drive great.

One of the best drivers cars ever of late, very few people who can drive well will slate it for its performance.

It costs a lot to run but is worth it considering what you get for the money, I think my 12 year old MX5 is worth more than some running RX8's nowadays.

I looked into this a little while back.
Buy rx8 for 2k.
Wait til rotor tips wear out.
Pay Mazda 1k to fix.

The end.

It's still a potentially great car for little outlay even if you get a fortnight of downtime every 50k miles.

Really? That's quite a bold statement.

I drove a few and as much as I wanted to like them I just couldn't. I found everything about them just mediocre (apart from the looks which I actually really like) I certainly wouldn't class them as a drivers car, they're far from being in the same league as an Integra or something.
