Is the Mazda RX8 that bad?

Really? That's quite a bold statement.

I drove a few and as much as I wanted to like them I just couldn't. I found everything about them just mediocre (apart from the looks which I actually really like) I certainly wouldn't class them as a drivers car, they're far from being in the same league as an Integra or something.

Bad driver spotted

Were doing the Ace Cafe run tomorrow. there is a late RX8 coming along. i expect it will drink just as badly as the bigger engined cars coming along and be demolished in straght lines sadly

Max speed 234 kph (145.08 mph)
0 - 100 kph 6.6 s
0 - 200 kph 30.5 s
0 - 100 mph 17.4 s
1/4 mile 14.5 s

that 0-200kph time is slow

I looked into this a little while back.
Buy rx8 for 2k.
Wait til rotor tips wear out.
Pay Mazda 1k to fix.

The end.

It's still a potentially great car for little outlay even if you get a fortnight of downtime every 50k miles.

1K? You're joking aren't you? A proper engine rebuild on the Renesis engine is around 3K.

Delusional fanboy spotted.

Trust me, I've owned enough performance cars and driven enough performance cars on and off track to know what a drivers car is and the RX8 simply isn't. The performance is weak, the handling average and overall just pretty dull. Certainly nothing to get excited about.

I have never, nor will I ever, own an RX8, I don't ever envision myself needing 4 doors or more than 2 seats. I am far from an RX8 fanboy.

You should swap opinions with NathWraith, he can't drive and likes them and yo can apparently drive and don't like them, that's the wrong way round.

Strange most people bang on about 'fun' and 'corners' on here after all, you can only legally accelerate up to 70mph on the roads legally and that only takes 7 seconds or so...

as has been said, its not even that great in corners (j/k ive not even driven one so cant comment on that subjective topic)

when it comes to fun cars, one of the most basic pleasures is mashing the throttle and getting sent off down the road

that 0-200kph time isnt even in ocuk warm hatch territory. a mazda mps gets there 5 seconds quicker

for the fuel cost, i would at least want to grin when i put my foot down

Basically the same as an NC MX5 in terms of chassis isn't it? I had a good play with one of those last time at Donington and was surprised how well it went. Not wanting to blow my own trumpet too much but not many match my pace, this car actually seemed marginally quicker.
This is of course completely meaningless since this had obviously had a proper suspension setup, and is a completely different model, and it on a smooth track, and is totally dependant on driver. I had the most fun of the day chasing it down though.

What lap times did you do

A couple of my colleagues have driven them and don't rate them. Reputedly found them sluggish feeling and not particularly enjoyable, as you have to drive them flat out to get anything rewarding out of the experience.

I've not driven one though. Would like to at some point, just to see.

Still, that engine would put me off buying one, point blank. I'd still be buying a Corvette for £4-6k :D
