Is there any hope for the human race?

Someone just needs to nuke Meta/X/Tiktok/YouTube from orbit and we will all be better off for it.

Not so sure about Youtube, Its my go to place if I want to understand, increase my understanding or learn how to do something from scratch. The other three can burn as you rightly say.

Get rid of advertisers and their revenue. The internet would become so much better.

Sure, there'd still be crazy stuff, and bad actors/states would no doubt fund propaganda - that's harder to eliminate - but at least most idiots wouldn't be further encouraged to just put stuff out for pennies.

It does make you wonder, if the internet from the very beginning was built around donation and memberships. How different would it be and it’s affect on society?
Well, it was built upon freedom and sharing knowledge. Some of us remember the early days with great fondness.

Advertising has never been about funding though. Sure, some people fund through advertising, but you'll notice that even subscriptions seem to eventually gain adverts.
Remember magazines that you'd pay for, and then slowly also had adverts on every other page ? It's a similar phenomenon. Now Netflix etc. are following it again.

The internet gives those who would exploit others for money, an ability to do so. It's greed, pure and simple.

(Before anyone tries to argue for the benefits of advertising, let's consider why adverts aren't opt-in - if they bring value, people will want to receive them, right ?)

Or is there a more positive spin that can be put on it all?

Yes, of course there is hope for the human race but it likely won't be found on an internet forum - that bastion of positivity! that reserve of optimism and practicality! - but in actual people doing actually meaningful things to make the world a better place.

It is so much easier to ask the doomsayer question than it is to do anything to improve other people's lives but thankfully they are there.

We face a monumental challenge that is for sure. If as a race we have the collective intellect and will to avert this issue is questionable. We have enough understanding of the problem and the solutions to deal with the issue though.

I'm loving the positivity in here  The world is much better in many ways than it's ever been. Step back from the internet and media spin and suddenly it seems so much better. The average person is much more likely to live longer, eat well, have free time, not be killed by disease, war or natural disaster (check the stats) despite there being more people alive right now than the rest of time put together.

Life is what you make it, I once attended a speech by a blind man that had climbed Everest, very inspiring. If you choose to sit in a basement and mope about the state of things rather than getting out there and doing something positive that's on you. Embrace life, before you know it it's passed you by ;)
