.. I only ask as I think I've reverted....

I used to be uber geeky as a child - and since my uni days are behind me and I'm on a steady career track, I think i've regressed!

An example - I've just bought 3 revell model kits and fully intend to spend my weekend putting them together...whats worse is that they're models of battlestar galactica ships...

My sorta gf says i am turning into a proper nerd - so my question to you is -

is it ok to be a nerd in this day and age?

I must stress that I am normal, I have a normal job and drive a normal car etc etc... but I'm quite looking foward to the most ubernerdy weekend ever putting them together.... sad!? I may even watch star trek as I do it!!

Any thoughts!

Yes.

Geeks > nerds. Geeks are interested in gadgets and games, nerds have intimacy and social issues.

[edit]Hang on, are you asking whether it is OK to be a nerd, or whether there is anything wrong with it? The answer to the former is no, the answer to the latter is yes :)

One I made earlier today.

Can i be a nerk then perhaps?? As far as social issues - i think an schoolmate mr DRZ can confirm that I am 'normal' - but I wouldnt put it past him to fib! Just ask 'im bout the barbershop quartet!

EDIT - re-read - you have a nice way with words... had to read it a few times before I got the gist! :P

If your "sorta girlfriend" leaves you, then the alarm bell would start to ring. Otherwise, be nerdy at certain times only so most people don't think you are and you'll stop worrying.

Battlestar Spastica though? Come on man, Star Wars Millennium Falcon!

It sounds like a cliche (ok, it is) but be true to yourself. If you're genuinely happy, what does it matter how your hobbies are perceived?

Of course part of happiness is to be liked and accepted by others which may mean you have to conform in one way or another at times.

It's all about finding a balance :).

There's nothing wrong with being into computers and gadgetry etc. as long as you're not some sort of recluse who does nothing else but.
But even that's not good enough sometimes. A girl heard me comparing server antivirus options over the phone today and she said, in a serious fashion, "Do you go out a lot at weekends? It sounds like you don't go out enough." And this was the wife of someone whose job is I.T.-related too. Little did she know...

Geek, Nerd, He-She or God... doesn't matter. If you're genuinely happy at nobody else's expense, there's nothing wrong with any of it!!

A geek is someone who has interests in what some people might find 'sad', but they still have a social life and act generally normal.

A nerd is someone who prides himself in his 'sad' interests and will happily exclude himself from society in the process of pursuing his hobbies.

It is not good to be nerd.

In that case, I'm a geek then.. settled!
