Is there anything wrong with being a nerd?!

Just be who you are and do the things you like; don't worry what other people think - if you do then you will stop being who you are.

sounds like self esteem's a problem, rather than actually being a nerd. If you need validation on the matter then that's the issue, not being a nerd itself.

I am a geek but cos I am so god damn sexy I have girls queuing up anyway so I keep it geeky. Why should i lower myself to fit in, my aim is to be as geeky as possible, I am slowly changing the world!

Who really cares? It's a question of 'what floats your boat' is it not? I collect 'action figures and books (specifically WWII books) and I presume that almost everybody here collects something and it's of no importance to anyone whether it's considered geeky or cool. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder (albeit I used to play D&D and a Beholder is the last thing I'd like to run into). More on my little hobby -

Oh, hold on, model dolls, model tanks, D&D and reference books on WWII British and German uniforms!!!!! Alright I confess ....... I am a geek.

nerds have:
social issues
fantasies about girls in star trek uniforms
a hard drive totally for porn
hygiene issues

geeks have:
girlfriends/boyfriends/some kind of relationship (including one nighters)
a social life that doesn’t involve WOW LOTRO or EQ2
the ability to have a normal conversation without bring up quantum physics computers or mathematics

i dont think model makings that nerdy i build warhammer 40,000 i find it relaxing and its something i can do quite well that doesn't involve a computer screen (although i do tend to watch telly/a movie while doing it). i do think its a bit nerdy tho but who cares its part of my charm

really nerdy people just annoy me

The geek shall inherit the earth!

Yep, geeks are regular people who happen to be more technologically minded.

Nerds are just nerds.

Don't geeks bite the heads off chickens?

I don't know how anyone can make a distinction between geeks and nerds. I've considered the two terms to be synonymous - can't be one without the other, etc. I also wouldn't necessarily label an individual interested in games and gadgets a geek or a nerd; surely most young males like that sort of thing these days.

my mrs doesnt think im a geek, even when i said i wanted battlestar dvds for my brithday, shes a bit dense though, ill happily sit and talk to her sister about it(iv known her ages and have always done it, which she finds funny) I even chat to her mum about the old ones, she still argues with me when i admit im a geek though.

Being a geek is cool, my ex loved me being a geek, a few other girls find it amusing cos its something new to them, depends on the girl.

one of the Team Leaders at work always tries to show me up by calling me a geek at work infront of the hot young ladies, completely back fires though because i decide when they work and if they can have days off etc...

:D

On a more serious note i agree with the comment that geeks enjoy "geeky" things, computers etc... but have social lives and skills, whereas nerds struggle with the latter and dont just enjoy geeky things have a sad dependance on them.

Im a geek :)

I'm a proud geek! Interested in computers/games/programming, but love nothing more than a good night out with mates :) (or the misses.... :p

.. I only ask as I think I've reverted....

I used to be uber geeky as a child - and since my uni days are behind me and I'm on a steady career track, I think i've regressed!

An example - I've just bought 3 revell model kits and fully intend to spend my weekend putting them together...whats worse is that they're models of battlestar galactica ships...

My sorta gf says i am turning into a proper nerd - so my question to you is -

is it ok to be a nerd in this day and age?

I must stress that I am normal, I have a normal job and drive a normal car etc etc... but I'm quite looking foward to the most ubernerdy weekend ever putting them together.... sad!? I may even watch star trek as I do it!!

Any thoughts!

Tom* :)
Yes there is. Nothing wrong with being a geek, though.
