Is there anything wrong with being a nerd?!

Gaming isn't really geeky anymore. It might have been when you were programming in BASIC on your Speccy, but console gaming is close to being as commercialised as films and music. PC gaming is, and always will be less popular, but it still has its fair share of followers.

It's quite fashionable now to be into 'gadgets', they seem to be considered an essential part of modern living. Which means that the real geeks have to dive deeper, into murkier worlds. I might be biased being a physics student, but talking about physics and maths is a sure fire way to alienate most of the population.

What, however, if you are heavily into something that is considered acceptable or cool/fun? For instance you're a obsessive cyclist or similar. Would that just make you dedicated, or is that another form of the geek?

Well that turned into the longest day of my life... bloomin trains on time as usual..

Nice to see some good replies - but i've definitely decided that I fit into the geek category.. which suits me..

Cheers for the replies folks!

sounds like self esteem's a problem, rather than actually being a nerd. If you need validation on the matter then that's the issue, not being a nerd itself.

Self esteem is certainly not a problem - I hold myself in very high regard thankyou very much!

The topic was not meant to be serious rather a discussion about the subject!

I wouldnt have got where I am today if it wasnt for self belief etc etc!

I have a good job, earn good money, good friends and have just received my second years mortgage statement - all in all I'm very happy!

The thread was not in the 'self validation' vein either - I was merely commenting on the fact that I've led a relatively normal life - but I was a geeky extrovert in childhood and I just thought it was quite nice regressing a little bit! :)

Peace

I'm a geek/nerd whatever, and quite ok with it really. I play games and paint Warhammer stuff, but I have a family too :)

Being a geek keeps me out of trouble...eg

Nice paint job.

I play 40k and FB and I don't paint i just by pre-painted figures of t'internet or use unpainted ones. No talent for painting. :(

I don't mind being a bit geeky as it is better than going out getting drunk and fighting. But like all things in life it must be in moderation. I like booze, women, sex and fast cars too!

So I climb mountains and ride my bike. Not geeky. Then I play 40K and spend money on Amateur Rocketry. Quiet geeky. I achieve balance and win.

There is nothing wrong with being a geek or nerd.

As long as you are happy.

Just because you're a nerd doesn't mean that you have know social life. Define yourself...

Not entirely sure if that was directed at me - but I'm game for a challenge!

22, nearly 23 red blooded male, university graduate - currently working as a civil engineer for a large company.. I'm into music in a big way - started out at school - choir, guitar group and then we started our own barbershop quartet - was wicked - 'specially when we did a gig in the girls school (at 16, and at our school that was a big thing!)

I was always into computers and tinkering - and I think when I was about 12 or something I watched star trek and thought 'this is quite kewl!' and thats when my love affair with all things sci fi began! Kind of petered of when I was doing a-levels, got involved with a girl and ended up doing school musicals! We split up when she went to uni, and I stayed at home which was sad but you get on..(LOL)

Then at uni, didnt really have the time - working full time(ish) whilst at uni was tricky so I didnt have much time!

Now, I'm fully qualified and have much more spare time on my hands - I'm sorta seein this girl and we get on great..

However, I think deep down will always be the little geeky child who beat rick dangerous in 2 hours!

Dont get me wrong, I'm not introvert in any way - there is no part of me that is, always the performer (some would say thats maybe because I'm insecure - but i'm not!)

Anyway ^'s me in a nutshell..:)

Get to many games? I'm a tranmere fan (awaits tirade of abuse!) - but i go see the reds every few weeks.. imagine its a bit of a ballache gettin up from gloucester!

Tom^

Not many matey. The cost is more and issue than the distance, I'm always skint.

Hoping to go to the derby at the end of march and hopefully an FA cup game or 2.

To be honest theres some people i know who call t hemselves gamers, now thats pretty god damn geeky. they are proper losers though, like complete and utter nebs. Virgin would be an understatement. They bum their consoles beyond belief and then get all hard over talking about PC monitors that have higher resolution than 1080p(they claim its a new thing)
It saddens me really, because
A) i know more than them about said subject
B) theyre so sad. What does this make me?
C) Then i realise, its cool to be smart!..

Yes there is.

Didn't you turn up in a thread about gaming t-shirts and say that they were all indisputably lame?

You seem to be rather blinkered to the fact that you are posting on a forum primarily focussed on computer hardware. Very cool I'm sure...

be true to yourself. If you're genuinely happy, what does it matter how your hobbies are perceived?

Of course part of happiness is to be liked and accepted by others which may mean you have to conform in one way or another at times.

True...

"We forfeit three-quarters of ourselves in order to be like other people."

Bah, when I were a lad being geeky actually MEANT something! Now there's average people on the street spouting Lord of the Rings quotes and every other home has a games console. There just isn't a feeling of belonging to this club of the select (and lonely:p) few anymore.
Must find something geekier... Maybe I should get into LARPing? :D
