is this unreasonable?

If its a big party and students are involved its gonna get smokey. Not much you can do about it really - short of turfing them all out and not letting them in again. If its a small party and they're all your mates, tell to stop ****** smoking 'cause its [peeing] you off.

I'm happy to smoke in a non-smoker's house as long as I firmly believe they don't mind - if I get the feeling they don't want me to, but are allowing me to be polite, I won't do it, or if I'm a tiny bit unsure I go and stand right by an open window and hang out of that. If I fully know I'm allowed to smoke I will, and if I know I'm not allowed to, I won't do it and won't ask again.
Very scientic. :D

If your quest isn't to make yourself seem like a giant ass then I suggest you think about making it so, seeing as you're really really good at it.

oK im going to have to rephrase it.

If its a party then anything goes im afraid, expect what ever happen and let it happen. Its not the end of the world. Dosnt sound like any of you have been to any good house parties.

If its a social gathering, then lay down the rules set aside an area for whatever in your case smoke outside, provide an area preferably covered. :D

If you wanna go upto complete strangers that have had a few beers and say oh noes plz stops smokings the smell makes me all squiffy im throwing you out of my halloweeeeen party! good for you, hope no one ends up in casualty either way.

Has it finished yet ? lol go take it out on the smokers there im just telling you a side of it you dont want to hear obviously.

You in halls of residence or something? shut the door to your room and lock it i really dont think its going to stink that bad, you really are over reacting.

No need to get personal, deep breaths (mind the smoke)

If you're referring to the party then no it hasn't, but i'm going to bed because I have lectures tomorrow morning and perhaps unlike the majority of students I actually go to mine in an attempt to learn.

And no i'm not in Halls, i'm in a shared house, which is why i'm so annoyed because half the people smoking know that no smoking is allowed in the house :S

wtf if someone started smoking in my house they'd get the biggest kicking of their lives, same if they started smoking in the garden (it always finds its way inside). don't put up with it, tell them straight, it is your house. if they dont stop just send them home. much better than having a house full of smoke.

-generally selfish crap-

I think you need to take time to put yourself in the OP's shoes.

How would you like it if someone came around, and despite you asking them not to, urinated all over your walls?

I doubt you'd like it very much.

A house is someone's personal space, i'm sure you have your personal space too. Have some damn respect.

divine_madness - go around, round up all the packets of cigs you can see, and give them a cycle in the dishwasher. Soggy cig anyone?

Now, rules of the house include not smoking in the house because it makes it ****ing stink and the non smokers (3 out of 8 of us) really dont like it.

You're outnumbered, and democracy dictates that you stop the anti smoking crap and live with it.. I do (afterall, 8 people are paying the rent).

So we have the party and everyone just starts smoking in the house. I've asked everyone i've seen to stop doing it nicely yet i return about 20 minutes later and they've lit up again.

And so they should you big wet blanket, it's a party. And a party is more than just you and your idea of a good time. Earlier on my house was full of people doeing lots of things that I choose not to do.. Again, it's not my place to throw a wet blanket over the party.

divine_madness said:
Is it really that unreasonable of me to expect people to not smoke in my house?

Unless you own the house, and these people arent paying rent then yes. Yes it is.

divine_madness said:
The worst of it is the dirty looks and comments I get when I ask people not to.

Personally I would tell you to take a hike (if of course I was paying rent).

divine_madness said:
I have to sleep here tonight and my absolutely STINKS of fags. it's horrible.

Then close your door!. You are afterall asking 5 people to inconvenience themselves!.

divine_madness said:
why are people so damn disrespectful when they start drinking?

I'm not going to argue with that.

I think that in the event that you don't like smoking, and you are living with smokers, firstly you have to ask yourself what the hell you're doing living with smokers in the first place. And secondly you have to ask, in the event that you do choose to live with smokers, why your own preference should take precedence (the smell thing doesn't wash. You close your door your clothes don't smell, simple, and believe me I know). It's not really fair to impose is it. After all, you are only 3 of 8.
Don't get me wrong. Up until a few months ago I had been a smoker for 8 years, and in that time I have lived with smokers and none smokers alike. And like mohinder, unless I was in the home of a smoker, or I knew for certain that the home owner didn't mind, I wouldn't have considered sparking up.
But in my own home, with the rent coming out of my bank account. I'm smoking, and there's nothing in the world going to stop me. You knew that when you moved in with me, or when I moved in with you, and if you didn't want that, then we parted ways. Very simple..
And as for causing a ruckus at a PARTY because of smokers.. To me that seems mental dude, it's a party lol, and you're worrying about the smell of cigarette smoke. I'm not bagging you chap, but you're what?.. 18-19?. What the hell are you doing moaning about cigarette smoke at 19?.

Either way, just my opinion..

He said in his original post that one of their pre agreed house rules is "No smoking". the smokers knew that when they moved in, and if they didn't want that then they should be the ones leaving. If they had all agreed that smoking was allowed he'd have no cause for complaint.

And since when did cigarette smoke only annoy or affect those over the age of 19?

Well with the pre-existing no smoking agreement, I was unsure as to whether this was a landlord-tenant type rule, or an actual agreement between the housemates. Because landlord rules rarely amount to much (or are expected to - regardless of opinion, lets face it. When the landlord says "don't put any posters up", or "don't smoke in the house", it's going to happen regardless) in student/shared accommodation. If it was an agreement between the tenants then fair enough, the smokers are indeed in the wrong.
And of course, smoking annoyance isn't limited to 19+, but at 19 I wasn't sitting at party's with throbbing veins over the fact that someone was smoking a cigarette (or anything else in fact). And I don't know a single party goer. I would have been actually enjoying myself (and the smell of a Marlboro red certainly doesn't ruin that).

Why? Because you have no respect for the landlord and you don't mind the risk of losing your deposit?
