Is this why Americans are obese?

I was in a small winter mountain town in America and paid a visit to Tesco. You can buy packets of 10kgs of bacon rashers, there are special offers on 10 litres of Pepsi, giant sized party cakes buy one get on free and other useless stuff. All of which was less than half the price over here! I thought that was the reason why there were obese people living in the country.

Every thing is *BIG*.

Hmmm didnt think they had tescos out there in America;) but yes even in Canada things are twice the size they are here. You get much more bigger portions than you would get here in rip off uk and trust me this place is a rip off completely and utterly.

Give u an example, the other night went to a restaurant in the city, london that is and i ordered an 8oz sirloin steak which was about £25 and i was absolutely shocked at the size of it and the way it was cooked. Theres no way on this earth that steak was an 8oz sirloin. So i ended up giving it back to them and telling them to politely shove it up their asses, like hell i was going to £25 for that tiny burnt portion of a nice steak.

Now in Canada/America an 8oz steak would be quite big and a lot more cheaper than it is here. Thats why i refuse to eat at these stupid posh city restaurants now, im not paying lots of money for something that will and wont even fill me up and i love my steak but i definitely prefer canadian/american steak than the utter garbage u get here

/rant over :D

Hahahah, but have you ever woken up surrounded by half eaten food with peanut butter on your face? That's when you know you may have to do something about it :D

Unfortunately not, I do wake up sometimes with plates next to me with crumbs on, but I don't think that counts as I took the food up to eat before I went to bed!

Yeah, go large maybe, but not supersize (which was even bigger than large when it was around). Plus Walkers (the UKs biggest crisp maker) has recently changed the way they make their crisps to reduce saturated fat in them. That's what I think he meant by "reduced fat" crisps.

I suggest you look at the back of the packet, right at the bottom on the left hand side, youll notice it wasnt that recently, nice marketing gimmik though. ;)

On the subject of portions sizes, macdonalds portions in the US are gigantic in comparison to the UK, we have small (4 chips and and the equivilent of a cup of coke) to large (nice size amount of chip and half a litre of coke). In the US they have small (same size as our large) to large (sometimes supersize) which consists of a bag of chips the same size as the small brown takeaway bags here and over a litre of coke. How can you not say sizes are no bigger in the US?

But as others have said its not just about how much you eat its what you eat as well. Im pretty certain if you eat a huge amount of fruit and veg you won't get fat, but if you eat a huge amount of crisps and sweets, yes you will.

I also believe that some peoples poblems are to do with genetic reasons, lower motabolisms etc. There is a growing theory that thousands of years ago having a fat gene was useful as it helped people store food more efficiently, thus saving peoples lives when there was no food around. People without this gene (the thin people) would have died. I also believe there is something to do with motabolism as well, I eat a hell of a lot more food than a lot of the fat people i know and at the moment am not particularily active but i am thin and they arent.

I am not condoning fat people, just saying that there can be underlying reasons as well as the obvious. These people just need to eat less, eat more healthily and excercise. And to all the peope who say that doesnt work I know someone in their 40's who weighed about 20 stone just over a year ago, she decided that she didnt want to die at that weight and started eating properly and excercising. She went down the gym every other day and ate smaller and healthier portions. After a year she now weighs about 11 stone. It works, she didnt go on the atkins diet or any of those stupid things (the ones that just remove the water from your body, not remove the fat), she worked hard and persevered!

Nice post, Amp.

It's all actually pretty simple. If energy in exceeds energy out, weight goes up.

So, if you're fat, you either need to adjust energy in, or energy out. Certain types of food are far better at providing good, easy to convert, useful energy than others. So, watch what you stick in your mouth, as well as how much of it, do regular exercise (which is good for you for far more reasons than simply your weight), and your weight will stay under control. Ignore that, and you're tempting heart attack, arterial problems, diabetes, arthritis and a whole host of other lovely conditions.

Weight is about lifestyle. Unfortunately for most people, this is where money helps. If you have it, you can build a pool in your home, and find you can fit a swim into a busy daily schedule, where a visit to a public pool isn't feasible because of work pressures. Same applies to a gym. And to a personal trainer. And to a chef that watches your calorific intake, and the balance of nutrients, vitamins and other essentials, in your diet. It's far easy to stay fit and healthy if wealthy (not that every does).

I mention this because of a recent thread about "wealthy v. happy". I said money was an enabler. This is one of the things it enables. It's possible to stay fit on a limited budget ..... but harder, especially as you get older.

It's simple....eat good = be bad; eat bad = be bad.

I used to do lots of swimming and land training and so on - about 15hrs/week on average.

I used to eat so much  - but my body needed it. Result - no weight gain. Muscle, baby ;)

Then for various reasons I had to stop, and eventually stopped completely, but still ate what I was used to which resulted in muscle turning to fat and food turning to fat

Now I hardly eat anything. A small sandwich and apple will do me for lunch, maybe a carrot as a snack. Perfectly healthy :)

It's all about balance.

My American friend who came over here thought that the portions we have in Britain were large.

I'm sure that the whole "wooow American portions are huuuuuuge!!!one" thing is at least partly false.

My old man went to New york a few weeks back and he said they are absoutely huge. Some bloke behind him ordered some onion rings for starters and he asked for the same, the waitress suggested he didn't. When he saw the blokes plate arrive, he saw why! Massive plate stacked to the rim.

He also said he saw like 5 fat people the whole time he was there

Maybe your friend needs to go to specsavers :p:D because theres no way on hell the uk portions are bigger than the north american ones. If they are then you get charged an arm and leg for it tbh.

Damn Im hungry.

I think being fat is down to how much self control you have and how much you can resist temptation. I love food, but I try to control my urges!

Just to put my penies worth into the discussion.

When I was over in L.A. I found it more difficult to eat healthily, fresh fruit and salad seemed quite rare and a lot more expensive in comparisson to the UK.

To be honest, we are quite lucky here that we have such an availability of affordable healthy options, if the majority of shops just sold calorie and salt loaded food, we would have a greater proportion of obese people here too.

That ain't the reason they're fat, the reason for it is the amount of crap they eat and how hardly none of them know what a good diet is, the amount of fat people I saw on my trip to Orlando last week was disgusting.
