Is Waitrose decent/ expensive?

they still have the same crap your find in tescos etc (given that its all the same food anyway - own branded stuff that is)

Twelve posts before this urban myth was rolled out; I thought it would have been sooner.

Supermarkets using the same very large manufacturers to produce their own label products does not mean that the own labels products are the same wherever you go. In fact there are agreements in place to ensure that the specifications or recipes are different.

I bought a blueberry muffin from Waitrose the other day.
It was the nicest blueberry muffin I've ever tasted.

M&S is very good too but Waitrose seems more popular in England.

I do all my shopping online via Ocado - which is the online arm of Waitrose.

Very impressed with the quality of even the "essentials Waitrose" products and a lot of items are price matched with Tescos. Fruit and veg always seems fresh and last a decent amount of time.

As already said, they also have a greater selection of "higher quality" foodstuffs - I can't even get Tillapia at my local Morrissons and thier own brand Humous is great and has loads of different flavours.

Different opinions maybe, though the best of the best always comes to the top.
Waitrose is overpriced as it is not consistently better than Tesco's in all areas.

Well Waitrose is more expensive than Tesco and that's for sure. I've shopped in all major UK supermarkets and one thing I found out is that each shop does some best items, I think it's all about preference and taste.
Also don’t forget that Waitrose and M&S usually have stores in the middle of shopping centres/town centres so I suppose their food is more expensive to cover higher rent etc.

I always seem to be impressed with the range and quality available at Waitrose whenever I shop in there.

i think tescos have much more choice though.

Why do people insist on pluralising supermarket names?

As most people have pointed out Waitrose meat, fish, veg and fresh bread can not be beaten by another supermarket. (many years of experimenting has proven this to be the case).

On the down side most branded products, for example old el passo's fajits kits, are more consistently priced. Ie they are bought by the store to meet demand, not at cost price, so there are less by one get one free deals to get things off the shelves. Some times this means they are not cheaper than bigger super markets, but in some situations it means they are just more consistent with the amount you have to spend on food each week.

I worked for M&S for a number of years as a Buyer - one of the people who put the stuff you (hopefully) want on the shelves - and even then, as much as I loved and love M&S, internally we did not think we were the best. Look at the marketshare of the major chains since 1994. Look at the developments and innovation that other retailers have taken on and compare it to M&S.

I understand that you like their store or their food or the experience or whatever, and that's fine. But you can't call something so subjective as a shop - and that's what these things are, regardless of the marketing behind them to make you believe they're anything else - "better" without knowing that it is just your opinion.

Waitrose are way overpriced imo, agreed they have some better food stuffs than Tesco, though Tesco still has a lot of better food stuffs, price and quality than Waitrose.

I think "way overpriced" is incorrect. The essential Waitrose stuff (their cheapest line) is generally the same price as Sainsbury's/Tescos "normal" stuff but the quality is much better. I find that shopping at Waitrose instead of Sainsbury's rarely adds on more than a couple of pounds difference for the weekly shop, and the quality is better. Things like fruit & veg are matched to other supermarket prices now, and more and more of the other things in the shop are being matched to other supermarket prices.

The main benefit of the Cambridge Waitrose (well, Trumpington) is that it's in the south, so you don't have to barge your way through hundreds of tourists to get there and do your shopping :p

Till girls are hot in our waitrose:D

You could wake up with any waitrose till girl in your bed and you'd have a smile on your face.
You could wake up with any tesco till girl in your bed and you'd have a rash on your nob.:(

You get what you pay for. Yes it's slightly more expensive, but the quality is much higher than all the other supermarkets. I always shop there for this reason.

Waitrose food is very nice - much like M&S but I prefer the former - and not just because I work for JLP :p

Waitrose are actually going to open a full store just around the Park Royal (west London) area BUT it'll have one big difference - that being there won't be any customers in the store itself ...

It's part of their plan to expand online deliveries in London and will be filled with virtual shoppers who'll go around the store picking what you ask them to pick - so if you specifically want greener bananas they'll pick them that way lol

Waitrose > M&S
I don't think this is true, especially in the current economy (in my opinion all the supermarkets have generally lower quality items that when the economy was good, so you have to work harder to find the best items for your £.) I've always used all the supermarkets and comparing M&S vs Waitrose I've never felt one is definitively better than the other, and if either has ever had an edge it's been due to having a better seasonal product line. Sometimes I've preferred to shop more often in Waitrose, but then my preference shifts in favour of M&S.

If you compare the own brand products certain things are better from M&S, some are better at Waitrose. The biggest difference is that Waitrose do have much more choice of expensive branded products, some of which is excellent for an occasional treat. Of my local supermarkets, specific branches of Asda and M&S generally have better fresh vegetables Sainsburys, Tesco, and the other M&S. Waitrose is actually the worst for fresh veg.
